RICHARD OLDENBURG Obituary

OLDENBURG--Richard E.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of my friend Dick Oldenburg. He loved MoMA so much and I appreciate everything he did for the institution, working together with a dedicated group of trustees, curators and staff. We had a lot of fun together over many years at the Modern and on International Council trips - from hosting royalty, to visiting with artists, and saying a memorable late-night farewell to Guernica. When we were together, Dick insisted that he handle introductions of foreign guests or artists for fear that I would badly mispronounce the names. He was probably right. I extend my heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Mary Ellen, and his brother, Claes. Agnes Gund

Richard was such an interesting knowledgeable person and I am thankful to have known him and for the help he gave me several times figuring out things. He was conversant in not only art but many topics and life itself.

He was thoughtful and warmhearted, always tried to make one feel at home. It was a privilege to have worked at the Modern during his tenure. May his family and many friends and colleagues cherish his memory.
