ROBERT BERKVIST Obituary

BERKVIST--Robert J. 1932-2023. It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Bob Berkvist on January 6, 2023 at the age of 90. Bob passed as he wished, peacefully at home, surrounded and cared for by his family. He is survived by his wife, Carol, son Andrew (Anita Gallers) and daughter Kristin (D'Arcy Hyde). Born and bred in Brooklyn, Bob worked at The New York Times for over 40 years, starting as a copyboy after earning his MA in Journalism at Syracuse University. He adored the arts, and it was his dream come true to first write and then edit pieces about books, theater, music and film. He retired from the Times' Culture desk in 2001, after which he continued to contribute obits for luminaries of stage and screen and to eagerly await his daily paper delivery, without which no day would begin to his satisfaction. Though we grieve his absence, his loved ones are immensely grateful for the many years we were graced by his mischievous dry wit, kindness and deeply loving support as a husband, father, and loyal friend. He will be greatly missed. According to his wishes, any donations in his memory may be directed to WQXR, Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, or Habitat for Humanity.
