ROBERT BROWN Obituary

BROWN--Robert Benjamin. March 4, 1928 -- June 16, 2022 Robert Benjamin Brown, a native New Yorker well known in the publishing industry, died peacefully at his home at the age of 94. He was the younger son of Chester R. and Edith Brown, both New York physicians. A lifelong Shakespeare scholar, Mr. Brown did his graduate work and taught English literature at Yale University. He served in the Army in the Korean war before returning to New York where he was an editor at such magazines as Esquire, New York Magazine, and American Heritage. Robert had numerous passions. He loved nothing more than poetry, and often regaled friends and family with impressive recitations. He perfected his chess game and was proud of having played with Karpov and Kasparov. His artistic endeavors also included painting original oils and copies of Jasper Johns and Mondrian. A resolute bachelor, Robert, fondly known as Bobby, was an entrenched part of the New York literati scene and spent many a convivial night at Elaine's. Predeceased by his parents, his brother Richard C. (Jeff) Brown and his step-brother David Brisk, he is survived by his nephews Duncan J. Brown, Anthony R. Brown, and JC Brown, and his sister- in-law Elizabeth Tobin Brown. The family would like to express their great appreciation for the loving care over the years from Marie Garcon, Norma Pringle, Antonia Lyawe, and Laura Clutz. A celebration of life will be held in September at the Yale Club. Donations can be made in his memory to Yale University.

I have known Robert since the time I looked like Candace Bergen and he made my acquaintance as I hailed a cab. He remained my dear friend through the years when I no longer looked like Candace Bergen.
