ROBERT FULTON Obituary

FULTON--Robert Lester, died peacefully on July 29, 2016 from pancreatic cancer. He bore up under the weight of a failing body with an unflagging mind, cheerful demeanor and a buoyant sense of humor. Born November 30, 1926, in Toronto, Canada. As a sociologist, Bob was well known for his work in the field of death, grief and bereavement and was a founding member of the International Working Group on Death and Dying. He was an early promoter of the hospice movement. Among his many contributions to the field was the creation of the first college course on death and dying in the United States, which he taught at the University of Minnesota in 1963. He is survived by three sons, David, Evan and Regan, grandchildren Julie and Davis, siblings Gwenn and Edward and longtime companion, Meryl Baker. Bob will be remembered fondly by his many friends and colleagues around the world. A memorial celebration of Bob's life is planned for September 24, 2016 at the University Club in Saint Paul, MN 2pm until 5pm.

Sunny fagerberg, Sharon - and I worked for dr Fulton as RAs or Department Secretary in the late 60s and 70s. He was making his lectures available on tape. His research partner was Prof Roberta Simmons, spouse of Pioneer Transplant Surgeon Richard Simmons, who made his transplant data base available. Several key studies on decision making and the grieving process. Eric Marcuson was his eclectic and bright grad student. And Viet nam War resistance was being met with pepper fog in front of Northrop. And we conducted interviews mailed out cassette tapes while watching Watergate hearings on 12 inch tv. We loved Dr Fulton and his unruly eyebrows and rough tweed jackets. Mostly we loved him because he was so wise.

I began teaching death education at Auburn University in 1977, using Bob's pioneering work as my foundation. I shall always be indebted to him for his work. I knew Bob through ADEC -- a fine and compassionate fellow.
To this day I am still working with death-related issues, primarily with the right to die group Final Exit Network.
My sympathies to Bob's family and again, my gratitude for his contributions.

Though I do not know Robert personally, his brief speaks well to my work in hospice from which I will retire in the near future. His work has no doubt blessed many people and helped train others and provide bereavement comfort to many. He will be missed. May your family be blessed and comforted during this time of loss. Rev.
