Robert Katzman Obituary

KATZMAN--Robert M.D. The Saul R. Korey Department of Neurology of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine mourns the death on September 16 of its former chair. Dr. Katzman came to Einstein in 1957 and rose to chair of neurology in 1963. He served until he moved to the University of California at San Diego in 1984. He was one of the first clinician-neuroscientists to insist, in 1976, that Alzheimer's disease was not normal aging but a genetically influenced degenerative brain disease. His pioneering efforts galvanized national and international research toward its potential remediation. He was a driving force behind the creation of the National Institute on Aging of the NIH. We express our gratitude for having served and trained under his visionary leadership and extend our heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife Nancy, his two sons, David and Daniel, and his entire family. Mark F. Mehler, M.D. Alpern Professor and University Chairman, The Saul R. Korey Department of Neurology Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University
