ROBERT MARKOWITZ Obituary

MARKOWITZ--Robert "Bob,"

of New York City and Kent, CT passed away peacefully on February 17, 2018 after a brief illness. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Susan Forbes Markowitz; adoring daughters Randi Udelson (Don), Julie Abod (Cornell), and Lisa Markowitz (George Carson); and grandchildren, David, Alix, Libby, and Cole. He also leaves dear brothers Gene Martin (Inga) and Jerry Markowitz (Janet) and former spouse, Robin Pollack (nee Elsen), mother of his daughters. Born in Manhattan on September 16, 1935, to Lottie and Harry Markowitz, Bob was the quintessential New Yorker, living and working in Queens, Brooklyn, and his beloved Manhattan. Bob knew "the city" like the back of his hand, and could provide directions to anywhere in the five boroughs. A well-respected health care administrator and risk management expert in New York City, Bob enjoyed an esteemed career at The Brooklyn Hospital, Long Island Jewish Hospital, and FOJP Service Corporation. He served with distinction on the Board of the New York Organ Donor Network and Greater New York Blood Center. Bob loved providing his services when called upon to find the most qualified doctor for family and friends. Bob and Susan spent time in New York City and Kent, CT. After retirement, they enjoyed most of their time in Kent, where Bob volunteered at the town library, serving as official photographer for special events, and at SCORE, mentoring entrepreneurs. Bob was an athlete and sports fan -- a great tennis and squash player, an "ok" golfer, a loyal fan of the New York Mets, as well as a New York Times crossword enthusiast. Well-known as a raconteur, Bob entertained friends with humorous stories from his childhood in The Bronx, his days at Columbia University and the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. The family prefers donations in Bob's memory to the Kent Memorial Library (www.kent memoriallibrary.org) or The New York Organ Donor Network www.liveonny.org

Dear Susan,
It was an honor to spend a few hours with you & Bob in mid February at your home as a hospice volunteer. I'd mentioned how synchronistic it was ~ and I will always remember you both, fondly.

Dear Susan,
Bob was one of the most special, kind, funny and wonderful people I have ever met. I worked with Bob throughout his entire tenure. You and Bob were at our wedding in June 1988 which I very much appreciated! Bob brought FOJP into the limelight as an important organization in the malpractice and liability field. Nary a day went by when he wasn't helping somebody and making an impact on them and their families. May his name be for blessed memories.

Dear Susan and family:
I was saddened to learn of Bob's passing.
When my career was first starting at FOJP I found myself in an interim director position for which I was not ready or qualified. I reported to Bob who took on the role of mentor and coach until a Director could be hired. As president of FOJP, he moved the company forward to a position of respect and leadership in the risk management community. His humor, charisma and business acumen underscored his leadership style. In my opinion, he was the best thing that happened to FOJP. May he rest in peace.

Susan and Family
I worked under Bob throughout his tenure at FOJP. He was a very strong and charismatic leader. You never doubted that you had a good leader at the helm of FOJP. He may be gone but our memories of him are still with us.

Bob Markowitz was a great and kind man with a clever sense of humor that initially surprised me coming from such a distinguished quintessential New Yorker. As a friend of his one of his daughters, he treated me like family when I moved to New York from the west coast and I will always remember fondly my time spent with him during those years. My heart aches for his family's loss. He will no doubt live on in the memories of the many people whose lives he touched.
