ROBERT MCKEON Obituary

McKEON--Robert B. Harvard Business School mourns the passing of one of its most exemplary graduates, Robert B. McKeon. A member of the MBA Class of 1980, Bob went on to have an extraordinary career as one of the original partners of Wasserstein Perella Management Partners before founding the private equity firm Veritas Capital. He once remarked to Dean Nitin Nohria that the daily discipline of analyzing three cases a day at HBS enabled him to tackle any problem under intense time constraints and sometimes with only limited information. As a result, he said he was forever grateful to the School and over the years was a great benefactor, establishing a fellowship fund in honor of his 25th Reunion that helped military personnel attend HBS. He also continued to take a leadership role in alumni events and initiatives. As co-chair of his 30th Reunion, for example, he led a fundraising effort that set a new 30th Reunion record, securing $17 million in support of the School and creating a legacy for his Class that will last for years to come. Bob became increasingly interested in the intersection of business and government and how private companies can do work in support of government-related services. To this end, he established a fund at HBS that will support research, curriculum development, and case writing , as well as publications and symposia on this important subject. We all are saddened by the loss of this accomplished and generous alumnus - an outstanding gentleman and businessperson who personified Harvard Business School's mission of educating leaders who make a difference in the world. Bob McKeon was a force for good in everything he did. We will miss him greatly.

Life is not the same without you dear brother; you are always in my thoughts and prayers every single day. I remember every vignette we shared as a family and as a sibling. Remember, you were loved by all of us. You are never far from us, Bobby. So many conversations take place in my family that strike the cord of the man you were and what you meant to my family.

Remembering Bob McKeon

On a crisp September morning in 1978 I went to Registration. Alone because I didn´t know anyone, there were masses of people and a very long line. This will take a while, I thought to myself. Within a minute or two, the line started moving. Pleasantly surprised, in another minute the line continued to move, amazing. Within a few short months, I´d understand better and be able to say, they understand process steps and flow, capacity and capacity balancing, how to staff and how to avoid bottlenecks. These people know how to manage a service operation.

A few days later after the first day of classes had started and study groups were formed, a guy named Bob McKeon came over to my house at 1001 Memorial Drive in the late afternoon. We were to prep cases together with a few other study group team members. Bob had arrived first and we talked in my front garden. Bob was good looking, straight forward and clear eyed. We talked easily, we laughed easily. A few minutes on growing up, family, fathers. There was a glint in Bob´s eyes, a smile, a connection had been made. Small talk was over quickly with Bob. We went inside, our other teammates arrived, and we got down to work.

The next day at school, before our first class started, we caught one another´s eyes, and sat together in the sky deck. I can tell you that we didn´t think we were being chickens by sitting in the top row at the back of the amphitheater, nor were we hiding from being called on, in fact it was just the opposite. We
chose the sky deck because we wanted to see the whole room, all the people, and get the big picture perspective on the whole situation including the profs. Unspoken between us was the thing we felt proudest of and were happiest about, we were there.

Within a week or two, I met Bob´s wife, Patty. Stability, grounded, I thought. She was lovely. Patterns get established quickly. Bob and I sat in the sky deck together for all classes during the first year. We talked, we laughed, we did our work. We were first friends, fast friends. We´d check in with each other on all the topics of life and living. Short, clipped sentences and phrases. We were dead honest with one another.

That pattern of limited small talk, but being dead honest, vital, real, and open with one another continued. Bob and I wound up renting a brownstone together on East 71st between Lexington and Park together for the summer of 1979. After graduation, Bob was in New York and I was in California. We´d see one another whenever we were both in town together. Bigger smiles when we
saw one another, and more laughs, yet at the same time, we´d run the list of all important topics with one another. We´d check in, we´d compare notes, we´d take one another´s temperatures. We´d share the essence of what was going on in our lives. He loved his children, his family, his work.

To say Bob was bright, serious, determined, successful, consistent, loyal, a good man, and a good friend are all true statements, understatements. I last revisited the HBS campus on a bright clear morning in July 2015. I thought of that Registration morning in September 1978. The main buildings, the air, the light, the beauty of the place are all unchanged. The difference between now and then are the 46 years that have passed. Bob and I were 23 when we first got together in my front garden. I miss him. Tim Butler, HBS 1980, Section B.

I was thinking about Bobby the other day as well as my time at St. Gregory Barbarigo Elementary in Garnerville, NY. One memory was of our school principal, Sister Catherine Florence, rushing into our 5th grade homeroom. She was very excited and told me and Bobby to stand up. I immediately thought We were in trouble ( I was mentally going through my offenses) but looked at Bobby surprised as he never got in trouble. Sister then informed us and the class that Bobby and I achieved two of the highest reading comprehension grades in NY State. We both had 9th Grade reading levels. I was not surprised at Bobby's results!
I was a classmate of Bobby's up until Sophomore year at Albertus Magnus. Ran track with Bobby too.

Bob is 2nd row, 2nd from right in team photo. Bob was my teammate and one of my idols in track. He was a gentlemen and a great teammate. Bob would be reading on the team bus while the rest of us would be joking around. A wonderful guy and one of the best quarter milers ever to run for Albertus Magnus High School.

Bob was my closest friend from our HBS days. The sadness I am experiencing now is tempered only by the knowledge that he is next to God looking down on his loving family and children and his friends. I shall miss the relationship we had over the last 34 years. Bob was a remarkable man-- compassionate, acutely intelligent, charming and incredibly industrious. I pray that his family's grief subsides in time and is replaced by their many fond memories of Bob. God bless you Bob and your family. It was truly honor to call you my friend.

A study group mate in our early days at HBS, Bob had a quiet intensity, a laser focus, and a wry sense of humor. He was sensitive, insightful, kind, and a good friend. His passing too soon is a shocking tragedy. My condolences to his family and all who knew him well. May he rest and know well how much he is missed.

Bob was a great friend from our days at HBS to our time at First Boston. He was the consummate professional and a generous philanthropist.
