Roul Tunley Obituary

TUNLEY--Roul. Family and friends mourn the loss of Roul Tunley -author, journalist, reporter, educator, editor, magazine circulation manager, and world traveler. Born in Chicago in 1910, Roul Tunley lived in New York City, Philadelphia, Stockton, NJ and more recently in West Palm Beach, FL. A graduate of the Taft School and Yale University, his first job was with the New York Herald Tribune as a cub reporter. In his teens Roul was lured to Europe signaling the beginning of a lifelong fascination with travel which he pursued fervently until the last month of his life. Many lifelong friendships were forged along the way. During World War II he served in Europe and North Africa as a Naval officer, involved with antisubmarine warfare (Intelligence and Operations). After the war, Mr. Tunley returned to Yale to teach English. In the fifties a suggestion for a "street story" opened the way for a lifetime career as journalist, editor and author. Hundreds of his articles appeared in Look Magazine, American Magazine, Ladies' Home Journal, Saturday Evening Post, and The Readers' Digest including many articles for the European edition. Mr. Tunley authored four books: "Kids, Crime and Chaos" (the first global report on a subject of universal interest-available in several languages); "The American Health Scandal" (an objective and factual report on health and medical care); "Ordeal by Fire" (the account of an American living in Dresden during the firestorm of WWII); and most recently a biography of his earlier years "To Be a Journalist". Both in prose and in person this sparkling and debonair raconteur will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Donations in his memory may be made to: Hospice of Palm Beach County.

I was researching Roul Tunley as my late Father Henry Tunley from Birkenhead UK looks exactly like Roul and I wondered if they could have been related. I was sad to see that Roul had passed on a year or so before my father. I believe a relative of ours emigrated to New York from the UK in the late 1800's.
