SALLY EDWARDS Obituary
EDWARDS--Sally Matson, passed away on July 11th at her home of over 70 years on Hook Pond Lane in East Hampton, Long Island. She was born Sally Ann Matson on August 2, 1926 in Miami, FL. Before her death she was one of the last survivors of the great hurricane that destroyed most of Miami in September of that year. In 1929 she immigrated with her parents, David and Frances Matson, to Buenos Aires, Argentina where her father helped to build, and eventually manage, Argentina's electrical power system. Her childhood in Buenos Aires enabled her to learn five languages and to become an accomplished polo player. Her many travels with her parents fostered a lifelong love of travel, art, architecture and gardens. After Sally attended Hollins College in Roanoke, VA, her family moved to Mexico City in 1946 where she worked as a bi-lingual reporter for the daily newspaper. A trip north to visit friends in 1950 introduced her to her future husband, James C. Edwards, and they were married in Mexico in April of 1951. Home for Sally and Jim was New York City and East Hampton where they raised their two children, James C. Edwards, Jr. and Anne McCabe Dunwoody (born Anne Matson Edwards). In Manhattan, Sally was a major benefactor and docent at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where her linguistic skills enabled her to move up the ranks quickly to give full-time tours. Additionally, she was an active volunteer at the New York Junior League and the Brick Presbyterian Church. With her husbands passing in 1996 Sally became more active in organizations in East Hampton. She was a longtime board member and benefactor of the Long Island Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, and served on the board as well of the East Hampton Library. Additionally, she was a huge supporter of many local charities. Vero Beach, FL eventually became Sally's home for most of the year, but she began spending winters there 25 years ago. During her time there she supported such organizations as the Humane Society of Vero Beach, highlighting her lifelong love of being a dog owner to many dogs that included Peso, Duffy, Cindy, Penny and Jasper. She was a benefactor of the Vero Beach Museum of Art and the Hospital in Vero Beach, among many Florida charities. Sally was a Iifetime member of the Maidstone Club in East Hampton, LI, the Colony Club in New York City, and the John's Island Club of Vero Beach, FL. When not enjoying time at home, she loved to travel, and one of her greatest joys was to take each of her grandchildren on a trip of their choosing with her as a high school graduation present. Sally is sur- vived by her son James C. Edwards, Jr. (Barbara) and daughter Anne McCabe Dunwoody (Colin); as well as by six grandchildren: Lorrie Edwards (Martin Galese), Caroline Edwards, Courtney Kahn (Matt), Katherine Juhas (Peter), Christina deforest Keys (David) and Thomas B. McCabe IV (Sarah), and ten great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held by her family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, gifts should he made to the Humane Society of Vero Beach, Florida.
