SAMUEL KLAGSBRUN Obituary

KLAGSBRUN--Dr. Samuel C., born September 23, 1932, died peacefully at home on November 11, 2023. A brilliant psychiatrist, he touched thousands of lives as founder and executive medical director of Four Winds Hospitals in Katonah and Saratoga Springs, New York. He was also a professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Jewish Theological Seminary, and on the faculties of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Yale University School of Medicine. But there is so much more. He was nationally known for the work he did on psychological challenges facing cancer patients, for his innovative approach to medical ethics and issues of death and dying, and for his lifelong devotion to improving hospice care. He spent time every year lecturing at St. Christopher's Hospice in London and eulogized its founder Dame Cicely Saunders at Westminster Abbey. He was passionate in advocating for and treating women in abusive relationships. In one highly publicized case, he defended Hedda Nussbaum who had been battered and traumatized by Joel Steinberg, leading to her recovery and Steinberg's imprisonment. A leader in the community, he was one of the founders of Or Zarua, a Conservative congregation, and a board member of the American Jewish Committee, the Schechter Manhattan School, and the HealthCare Chaplaincy. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, he emigrated with his parents to Manhattan, where he attended the Ramaz school, Yeshiva High School, City College and the Jewish Theological Seminary. He received his medical degree from Chicago Medical School and completed his residency at Yale New Haven Hospital. He served as a psychiatrist at the New London Submarine Base where he held the rank of Lt. Commander, and retained a lifelong love of sailing. He and his beloved wife of 68 years, Francine, met at Camp Ramah in the Poconos. She worked as an editor to help support his medical studies, and became an author in her own right. She survives him, as does his adored daughter Sarah and son-in-law Eric Weinstein, and cherished grandchildren, Eliana, Benji, and Ari. Everyone who knew him will miss his optimism, never-ending kindness and sweet smile. I can only say one thing about Sam. He was the most important person in my life. He saved my life. I loved him like a father. He was kind, generous, compassionate, caring, brave, and so wise. He had a light that shone into whatever space he was in. I am more than saddened to hear of his passing, and I give my condolences to his family. There will never be another Sam.

I was a member of Or Zarua. One Friday night I came into shul, waiting for mincha to begin. I was very angry about a customer I had dealt with that day (I worked in retail) and vented to Sam. He cleared it up in an instance by pointing out about people's sense of entitlement. I never thought that entitlement could apply to wealthy people. He just knew the right thing to say. I've never forgotton that.

Sam Klagsbrun was a client and friend. I represented him on several occasions with respect to his and Four Winds office space moves in NYC. During our time together not only did we discuss the real estate issues but he also was interested in my life growing up with Holocaust survivor parents. He was a great listener and was able to help place in perspective many open ended questions about my parents and the trauma they endured. Sam was a special person. May his memory be a blessing.

Dr. Klagsbrun was an angel on earth. He was a genious in the field of psychiatry, and the programs he created at Four Winds were far ahead of their time. I´m so thankful to Dr. Klagsbrun for creating Four Winds, and also for the time that I spent in the group sessions he led there. I and countless others learned and benefitted so much from him. I hope Dr. Klagsbrun´s legacy lives on. May his memory be a blessing.

Dr. Klagsbrun was an angel of mercy to my 15-year-old son, dying of brain cancer - and even more so to me. His wisdom, compassion and generosity (in every sense) made that unspeakable time as better as it could be made. I remain eternally grateful to Dr. Klagsbrun, a man of the highest consciousness. It was a great honor and privilege to have known Dr. Sam! He was an inspiration beyond words. In our tradition, it is written that "one who saves a person is as one who has saved an entire world". It is certainly impossible to calculate how many worlds Dr. Klagsbrun is responsible for having saved! In addition to his healing work in medicine, he did great healing work in the realm of spirituality, and anyone who has any connection with JTS is well aware of the extraordinary contributions Dr. Klagsbrun made there as well as at Four Winds and everywhere else where he contributed to the betterment of the human condition. He will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on in all of us who are privileged to have had our lives impacted by him. My deepest condolences to his precious family, including his wife, Francine, who has made profound and lasting contributions to Judaism, to his daughter Sarah, with whom I have had the privilege to work, and who has taught me much, and to his precious grandchildren. His memory lives on in all of you!

Even though we grew up on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, our branches of the family were intertwined and Sam was much admired. He brought healing to so many. May his memory be a blessing.

While I was a psychodramatist at Four Winds, Sam asked me to substitute teah for him in a class at JTS class for him when he was away. That event led to the development of Bibliodrama, my vocation. Sam was, after my father, the most important man in my life.
