SEELIG FREUND

FREUND--Seelig, longtime resident of Manhattan and surgeon at Beth Israel Hospital in New York, died peacefully of old age on January 8. He was 101 and lived in Palo Alto, CA. Son of immigrant parents from Russia, he graduated from the Heights campus of NYU in 1933 and NYU Medical School in 1937. He served as Chief Medical Officer on the Queen Mary during World War II, which had been converted into a troop transport ship, crossing the Atlantic 44 times and achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was in private practice for more than 40 years thereafter at Beth Israel and other hospitals in Manhattan. His beloved wife Charmian died in 2002. He is survived by daughter Deborah Freund of Claremont, CA, her husband Tom Kniesner and grandson William Kniesner; and son John Freund of Atherton, CA, his wife Linda Grais and grandsons Alexander and Nicholas Freund.
