SHIRLEY BRODSKY Obituary

BRODSKY-- Shirley Markowitz. Shirley Markowitz Brodsky, of New York City and East Hampton, passed away peacefully at the age of 105 on July 6, 2022. Shirley was born in Brooklyn on May 14, 1917, to Morris and Minnie Markowitz and grew up with her sisters Adele, Anne and Jean. After graduating Madison High School in Brooklyn, she went on to Brooklyn College. It was in 1935 that she met Nathan (Jon) Brodsky at a school function. After marrying in 1937, the two were inseparable for close to 70 years until Jon's death in July 2006. She is survived by her children Thea Amr and Daniel Brodsky, their spouses Asad Amr and Estrellita Brodsky, as well as six grandchildren and their spouses, Hady and Haneez Amr, Tamer and Angela Amr, Dean and Amira Amro, Alexander and Kate Brodsky, Katy Brodsky Falco and Simone Falco, and Thomas and Megan Brodsky. She was a loving great-grandmother to her 15 great-grandchildren: Tarek, Beatriz, Zayd, Zane, Frederica, Kais, Daniel, Delphine, Willa, Teo, Nora, Antonia, Greta, Paloma and Annabelle. Tate, as she was lovingly known to her grandchildren, often remarked to friends and family how fortunate she was to have such a wonderful family. Her positive attitude was inspirational; as was the joy she felt spending time with her family. An accomplished pianist, Shirley enjoyed many years playing chamber music alongside her husband Jon on the cello. She believed deeply that music should be made available to children of all backgrounds, giving strong support to Education Through Music, the Young People's Concerts at the New York Philharmonic, and public school art programs at the Metropolitan Museum. An equally important part of her life was gardening, painting, playing scrabble, and doing puzzles with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the basis for many intergenerational relationships. Shirley painted at The Art Students League with many renowned American artists and pursued her passion at the 92nd Street Y well into her 100th year. Her children and grandchildren continue to appreciate her paintings, which hang in their homes today. Indeed, Shirley's greatest pride and joy came from her family, to which she dedicated her time and care, always supportive of their achievements. She was a positive, independent, strong, and adoring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed. Family members will gather for a private burial service.

Shirley was a wonderful light in our painting classroom at the 92nd ST Y. As one of her fellow classmates, Joan, remarked, it was a good day when Shirley arrived. Shirley was a dedicated and focused artist. As she painted late into her life she continued to be an adventurous spirit with her work. I miss her, her paintings, her quiet, smart and thoughtful demeanor. We all share in our love for Shirley and the long beautiful life she lived.
