STEPHANIE COHEN Obituary

COHEN--Stephanie Kaplan Stephanie Kaplan Cohen. Born November 1, 1927 in New York to Augusta and Samuel Kaplan and a resident of Scarsdale, New York for more than 60 years, died at her home August 11, 2024. Beloved wife of the late Charles Cohen, mother of Charles Kotler (Gigi), Cobby Shereff (Charles Blumenfield), Amy Bauman (Alan Laves), beloved grandgrandmother "Stessy" of Joshua Aidan Dunn, Hannah Kotler, Rebecca Shereff Martin (Gideon), Daniel Shereff, Elizabeth Shereff, Samuel Bauman (deceased), William Bauman, and Rachel Bauman. Also survived by loving and devoted nephews, nieces, cousins and dear friends. Predeceased by her siblings Helen Koppel and Margaret Klepner. Stephanie grew up in Long Beach, NY and had a lifelong love of the ocean. After graduating from Adelphi University, she started a long career of service to others. She was a medical social worker, taught children with special needs, was a child advocate for the Jewish Board of Family Service. Stephanie was President of the Mental Health Division of the Lexington School for the Deaf and also served on the board of the School. She served as President of the Westchester and Putnam County Alzheimer's Association and for many years wrote a column "Ask Stephanie." In retirement, Stephanie began a new chapter of her life as a successful published author. She was a prolific and talented poet, wrote numerous short stories and completed several full-length manuscripts. Her motto was "family first" and she held generations together with holiday tables that magically expanded to hold multitudes, an open house in which literally everyone was welcome. She sang with gusto and joy and completed The New York Times crossword daily (in pen) as her own personal competitive sport. Her humor and whimsy infused her life and was reflected in her beautiful garden and nature walk. Hers was a life well-lived. Funeral service Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at 10am at Westchester Reform Temple in Scarsdale, NY, followed by interment at Mt. Eden Cemetery in Valhalla, NY.

Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

I send my first anniversary condolences to Stephanie´s family and friends as they gather again to remember her and to celebrate her remarkable life. I was in her Scarsdale writing class with Louise Albert in the 80´s and 90´s, a rapt listener to Stephanie´s stories and observations. She was a kind critic of our writing, encouraging us by her own bravery in sending pieces to the New York Times "Metropolitan Diary" and getting her humorous essays published. I have her book of short stories upstairs.
Mainly, I remember her as a feisty, fair, loving, talented writer, generous with her time and treasures to family and friends. Her memory is already a blessing.

Our family lived across the hall from Stephanie on West End Avenue in the early 1950s. My late mom remained her good friend for years. I remember her warm smile and sending me a congratulatory telegram upon my college graduation, more than 55 years ago. I pass along my condolences to the family.
