STEVEN GERARD Obituary

GERARD--Steven L. 1945-2022. Steven L. Gerard, 76, passed away of pancreatic cancer on April 12, 2022. Born in the Bronx, he was a graduate of Queens College with a BA in economics. He served in the Army from 1965-1967. Mr. Gerard was the Chief Executive Officer of CBIZ, Inc. (CBZ-NYSE) from October 2000 until his retirement in March 2016 and remained Chairman of the Board. Prior to CBIZ, Mr. Gerard was Chairman and CEO of Triangle Wire and Cable, Inc. Mr. Gerard's prior experience included 16 years with Citibank, N.A. in various senior corporate finance and banking positions, and seven years with the American Stock Exchange where he last served as Vice President of the Securities Division. Mr. Gerard also served on many Boards, both public and charitable. At the time of his death, he was Director, Chairman of the Compensation Committee, and member of the Audit Committee of Lennar Corporation (LEN- NYSE), and Director and member of the Audit and Finance Committees of AutoNation, Inc. (AN-NYSE). Mr. Gerard was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Queens College Foundation, and its former Chairman. Mr. Gerard was previously a Director, Chairman of the Compensation Committee, member of the Compliance Committee and the Audit Committee of Las Vegas Sands Company (LVS-NYSE) and lead Director and member of Audit Committee of Joy Global, Inc. (JOY-NYSE). Mr. Gerard was on the faculty of the National Association of Corporate Directors and earned the NACD Leadership Fellow designation. The greatest joy in his life was his family, particularly his wife of 40 years, Jane. He enjoyed summers in Nantucket and winters in Hawaii, where he would go fishing, play tennis, and boogie board with his grandkids. He was an avid traveler and gourmet cook. But most of all, he was an incredible Papa. In his grandson's own words, "he was the best, nicest, funniest, kindest person I ever knew." He is survived by his wife, Jane Heller; son, Andrew; daughter-in-law, Melanie; two loving grandchildren; mother, Annette; and brother, Neil.

Having left CBIZ 10 years ago, I was unaware until today that Steve had passed. I first met Steve in Cleveland in 2000, while working on a team to replace our current CRM. Steve wondered why a car service was taking me back to the airport (viewing this as expensive, I suppose). I should have Ubered but it didn't exist. Over the years, Steve started visiting our Chicago office monthly for our Model Cities Meeting. I asked to be a part of it and he said yes. It was in these interactions that I got to know Steve better and found him to be a witty, warm and direct. He was an example of commitment and vision for CBIZ - particularly in his dedication and support of CBIZ Women's Advantage - a program he insisted must succeed - and it has. We were all enriched by Steve's presence in our midst. I will miss him. Lisa
