Hon. Steven S. Mukamal, Esq. One of the nation's most prominent immigration attorneys, 76, died from complications of end-stage renal disease on July 19, 2017, at Aventura Hospital with his beloved wife of 33 years, Kathleen, by his side. Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Steven arrived to New York in 1950 with his family. In the late 1960s he cofounded Barst & Mukamal LLP, the nation's oldest law firm dedicated solely to immigration. He served as National Treasurer, Second and First Vice President, and National President of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) from 1973-1979. He spoke at hearings in 1978 held by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights addressing the denial of rights in the immigration process, and in 1993, he co- authored the treatise "U.S. Immigration Laws: Working, Living and Studying in America." He was an active member of the Council on Foreign Relations, 1996-2007. An entrepreneur and a philanthropist, in 1982 he received the National Humanitarian Award from the National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE), and he acted as the NCFJE's Vice President, 1995-1996. A dedicated public servant, he was Mayor of Woodsburgh, NY, 1975-1978. He graduated from Brooklyn Law School, J.D. & LL.B, 1965, Michigan State University, B.A., 1962, and Lawrence High School, 1958. Predeceased by two siblings, he is also survived by his sons Theodore and Andrew, three siblings, and children and grandchildren from a prior marriage. His funeral will be held at Riverside Memorial Chapel Monday, July 24, 2017 at 9:45 a.m. Donations in his honor can be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
