STEVEN SCHINKE Obituary

SCHINKE--Steven P. The entire Columbia School of Social Work community notes with deep sadness the death of Professor Steven P. Schinke, the D'Elbert and Selma Keenan Professor of Social Work. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Dr. Schinke was a professor at Columbia for over 30 years. Over the years, he served as chair of numerous faculty committees and, most recently, was faculty director of the CSSW online program. In his pursuit of evidence-based interventions, he conducted clinical trials testing prevention programs aimed at improving the lives of America's youth. The recipient of many awards and honors, Dr. Schinke will long be remembered as a scholar, a teacher, a scientist, and a mentor. Sincerest condolences are extended to Dr. Schinke's wife, Mary, their family, and friends. Dr. Irwin Garfinkel, Interim Dean

Dear family and friends of Steven,
We have lost a dear friend. He changed my life, one evening when I was distressed over Statistics. He is the reason I went to Columbia UN. It was his warmth and encouragement at a time when I doubted my ability. I am able to do more for people because of his light. I am ever so grateful to this dear man. (I got to shake his hand, and I did say to him, "I love YOU!" as I graduated from CSSW). Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! We will carry your work forward! Aimee Sullivan Bibb, Juneau, Alaska

Dr. Schinke was a beloved member of the Columbia community, especially amongst his online students. I had the wonderful pleasure of taking his research methods class last semester, and absolutely loved it because of him. He was kind, sharp, humble and spirited. His self-deprecatory demeanor made class enjoyable and put students at ease. He was the first professor to whom I sent an email at Columbia when I was confused about a class requirement. I nervously awaited for his response, wondering if he was going to appear strict and cold. He was exactly the opposite- I could tell through a quick response that he was sweet and helpful. I felt comfortable immediately. I was sad to finish his class last semester and hoped our paths would cross again. I only saw him through a computer screen once a week for three months, but he left an indelible mark. I will miss him. I send my prayers and condolences to his wife, family and friends.

Dearest Friends & Family of Mr. Steven Schinke,

I am deeply sorry for your loss- Professor Schinke touched the hearts and minds of so many students, including mine. I was only graced with the privilege of knowing Professor Schinke for one semester, but truly gleaned so much knolwedge and positivity from his course, rendered fully by his kind and engaging spirit. I send prayers of love and strength to those most touched by Professor Schinke. I live in Los Angeles as a distance student and I am proud to say that Professor Schinke was a classroom favorite, motivator, and overall friend to so many of us here- even through a computer screen.

Sincerest Condolences & Wishes of Peace,

Abbie
