SUSAN ROLFE Obituary

ROLFE--Susan Sulzberger.

On October 23, 2017, at home, of natural causes. She loved life and life loved her. Adoring and adored mother of Joanne R. ("Jody") Quinn, Myron Sulzberger ("Mickey") Rolfe, and Penny R. Sullivan and our husbands Roger, Bruce, and Tim. Grandmother of Billy, Teddy, and Tom. Great-grandmother of three adorable little girls. Ex-wife of the recently deceased Tony Rolfe, and dear friend to many world-wide. Our mother was a rare physical beauty, and a fun, kind, and thoughtful lady as well. Susan, a native New Yorker, was a graduate of The Dalton School, and of The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in its heyday in the early 1950s where she was a student of Sandy Meisner. Our mom was a former actress, an art lover and advisor, a former member of the Christie's auction house family. She was a frequent and curious world traveler, and an enthusiastic amateur photographer. Suzy rarely missed a Met opera opening night, where she was a longtime subscriber, was seen in Bill Cunningham's column, and lunched with the ladies. Her boundless love lives on through us and our children and our children's children. Warm hugs to Gladys Johnson, our mother's longtime friend and homekeeper, and we gratefully acknowledge her nurses Kathleen and Geraldine who cared for her as if she were their own. We also extend our gratitude to Calvary Hospital Hospice. Services entrusted to Frank E. Campbell, The Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Avenue at 81st Street, where we will receive family and friends from 5:30pm to 8pm on Monday, October 30th, with a celebration of her life at 11:30am in the Chapel at Campbell's on Tuesday, October 31st.

I knew Susan well when I lived in NY in the 1980's. I have just learned of her death and I send her family my deepest sympathies. She was a lovely lady who always sparkled .

We went through Dalton together, and remained friends ever since. She was not only beautiful on the outside, but the inside as well. When I came to New York from D.C. our "gang of eight best friends from Dalton" would lunch together, and laugh together. She had a infectious laugh, and was a most loyal friend.. Rest in peace, Suzie.

Suzy-

We traveled through Dalton together, and I have wonderful memories of those days. Every time I came to NYC from D.C. we'd meet with the "whole gang" for lunch. Rest in peace my friend.

A shining star has been extinguished. The light and love you shed on the world was so greatly cherished by all who knew you.
Rest in peace finally dear Susan. Will never forget you.

Susan was such a vivid prescence! And such a loving friend!!! I am grateful to have known her. We met via Facebook and became friends in real life too ... we enjoyed long conversations about opera, elephants, Travel, computers and how to repair them! I remember one conversation we had in particular: favourite meals!!! She will be so missed by all who loved her!!!

When Diana Vreeland coined the phrase The eye has to travel, she clearly had Susan in mind. Whatever room she graced, all eyes veered to behold Susan's beauty and spirit.
She filled her space with humor, generosity and intelligence.
God rest, dear one.
