SOLOMON--Susan L. The Trustees, faculty, and students of The Rockefeller University are profoundly saddened by the death of our cherished friend and philanthropic colleague Susan Solomon, founder and CEO of The New York Stem Cell Foundation. A lawyer by training and a gifted leader by nature, Susan established the NYSCF in 2005 to address what she saw as an unmet need to harness stem cell research in ways that would accelerate cures for the major diseases of our time. Her success was phenomenal. Starting from scratch, with no medical or scientific background, Susan educated herself. Through intelligence, determination, and sheer force of will, she built the NYSCF into one of the world's most important advocates for and funders of stem cell research. Susan's impact on the field of stem cell research has been incalculable. Her contributions to science and medicine will continue to yield dividends long into the future. Here at Rockefeller, we are immensely grateful to the NYSCF for supporting the work of many of our most exceptional scientists. We are also proud to host the foundation's annual conference on our campus each year. A visionary thought leader, Susan has been an inspiration to scientists and philanthropists everywhere. We will miss her indomitable spirit, her passionate dedication to improving human lives through biomedical research, and her extraordinary grace. We send our deepest sympathy to Susan's husband, Paul Goldberger, her entire family, and her large community of friends and colleagues.
