SYLVIA LOWE Obituary

LOWE--Sylvia Stallings. Born in New York City on April 22, 1926, to Laurence Tucker Stallings and Helen Poteat Stallings, and died in Alexandria, Virginia, on May 27, 2022. A graduate of the Brearley School and Bryn Mawr College, she was a poet, writer, editor, book critic for the Herald Tribune and other newspapers, and translator. Her poetry was published in Harper's and The New Yorker, and her edited books include Andrew Muir's William Marsh Rice and his Institute: A Biographical Study (Rice 1972), contributions to The Papers of Jefferson Davis (Rice 1971-2015), and a translation of Emile Male's Art and Artists of the Middle Ages (Black Swan Press 1986). As editor she worked at Rice University and at the (formerly Georgetown) Center for Strategic and International Studies. Married to Donald R. Morris from 1953 to 1973, she raised four children in Berlin, Paris, Kinshasa, Houston, and Washington, and was married to William W. Lowe until his death in 2016. She is survived by her children, Sarah Morris (John Papadopoulos), Michael Morris (Kelly Cassaday), and Julia Kashkashian (Dikran Kashkashian), granddaughter Helen Isabel Morris, and five stepchildren and families; she was predeceased by her sister, Diana Poteat Hobby, and daughter Margaret Helen Morris. A longtime resident of Alexandria, Virginia, she remained deeply attached to her family home in North Carolina, loved and cared for all her life. Gracious and generous to all, Sylvia is deeply missed by her family, friends, and neighbors. Burial arrangements are private, with a memorial service in the fall.

I was privileged to meet with Sylvia and Diana at Forest Home, three times, with groups of the William Louis Poteat Scholars of Wake Forest University, one group included the Chaplain, Ed Christman. The Scholarship is named for Sylvia and Diana's grandfather and is designated for well qualified students who are members of NC Baptist churches and expected to make contributions to society and church before, during, and after their graduations. Both sisters were very interested and supportive of the Scholars. On my last visit to Forest Home, I believe, Sylvia donated the portrait of her father, Laurance Stallings, to the University. It was a privilege and a joy to get to know both Sylvia and Diana and to appreciate their interest in the Scholars.
May God continue to bless your families.
Sincerely, Lynn Parker, retired Poteat Scholarship Coordinator
