THEODORE CLEMENT Obituary

CLEMENT--Theodore "Ted" Dayton. Theodore "Ted" Dayton Clement died at home on January 5, 2024 after almost ten years fighting a rare kidney cancer, hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell cancer (HLRCC). He was 40. He is survived by his loving wife Diana Cornely Clement and their son David Zwiep Clement and daughter Alice Merrell Clement. Ted graduated from Brick Church School and Collegiate School in New York City. He graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN in 2006. He earned degrees in City Planning in 2010 and Law in 2013 from the University of Pennsylvania. Ted brought his experiences as a City Planner for the New York City Department of City Planning to bear on his legal work in the real estate sector at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson. He was a formidable land use and real estate attorney, with an enviable and unrivaled encyclopedic knowledge of transportation systems and networks. His relish for the eccentricities of land use law impressed zoning boards and clients alike. Ted remained singularly devoted to his communities and all of the people he met along his journey. He served the institutions that helped to shape him, sitting on Macalester College's Board of Trustees; as an Elder at The Brick Presbyterian Church (Brick Church) in Manhattan, where he chaired the Day School Committee; and served on the Board of Directors of his family's company, The Okabena Company in Minneapolis, MN. Ted's resolve to care for his family never yielded. Neither did his impeccable manners and dedication to handling his life - even the most trying moments of his illness - with a seemingly infinite supply of humor, grace, and aplomb. Ted is also survived by his parents, Stephen Merrell Clement, III and Sally Dayton Clement; his brother Winston Wallace Clement (Elizabeth), and nieces Abigail and Hannah; his in-laws Helen Zwiep and C. Michael Cornely; brothers-in-law M. Joseph Cornely (Cheryl) and nephews Nathan and Grant, and Daniel J. Cornely (Jessica) and nephew James; and countless friends and members of the Clement, Cornely and Dayton families. A celebration of Ted's life will be held at Brick Church on Saturday, January 27th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Brick Church School, Macalester College, or the charity of your choice.

I´m so sorry for the loss of such an admirable young man. My deepest condolences to Stephen and Sally and the entire Dayton/Clement families. I knew Sally and her mother as fellow trustees of Vassar College and Stephen as head of the Browning School. They raised all their children to be wonderful, giving, caring members of the world. Broderick (Rick) Grubb, Macalester College Class of 1973

January 11, 2024

Ted and I joined the Macalester College Board of Trustees in the same year. Ted was a more recent graduate, 2006, while I was a much older graduate (1973). I immediately liked Ted and was immediately impressed by his intellect and his wonderful sense of humor. We took different routes to get to Macalester. However, we connected because of our shared Macalester experience and our desire to make certain that our shared experiences would be enjoyed by other young people for years to come. We wanted to make sure that our education would be accessible to all bright and hard-working students without consideration of their economic station in life.

I will miss seeing Ted at meetings either in person or via video conference. My prayers and sincere condolences go out to Diana, the children and the rest of Ted's family and friends. I know that this is a very hard time for you. I will be praying that you will be comforted by the Holy Spirit and that Ted will now rest in peace as he joins the ancestors.
