THOMAS SHORTLIDGE Obituary

SHORTLIDGE--Thomas. Thomas Andrew Shortlidge, passed away on January 30, 2024, at home in Lakeside, MI surrounded by his loving family. Tom described himself as a "chameleon of sorts." On any given day, he could be a writer, designer, painter, or creative director. Tom culminated his 33 years in advertising at Young & Rubicam Chicago, rising to Executive Vice President and Creative Director. Tom was responsible for every imaginable kind of product from beer to bologna, contact lenses to hotels. His clients included Adidas, Allied Van Lines, G. Heileman, Miller, and Pabst Brewing, John Deere, WLS- TV, Wesley-Jessen, the Nature Conservancy, and Sears where he created "The Softer Side of Sears" campaign, re- invigorating the Sears brand. His work received countless advertising and design awards, including several Clios, the Oscars of the advertising community, and he was named to numerous creative "All Star" lists. Tom's most widely recognized work is likely the image he helped craft for Crate and Barrel. As a young man, he went to work in the first Crate and Barrel store and began a decades-long collaboration with the company's founders Gordon and Carole Segal. During that time, Tom created the famous Crate and Barrel logo and distinctive packaging still in use today, as well as beautifully conceived catalogs and advertising. His work for Crate and Barrel is included in the permanent design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In retirement, Tom brought an all-encompassing, passionate intensity to each of his endeavors. He enrolled in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, taking classes while pursuing an active career as an artist. Tom drafted a book celebrating the 100th anniversary of Chikaming Country Club where Tom was a member and board officer. He loved writing and never took the task lightly, sometimes taking hours to compose the perfect email to a friend. Tom is survived by his wife Carole, daughter Chelsea, son Adam, stepdaughter Laura, brother Neil, and grandchildren Chase, Emma, Dylan, Jack, and Will. Above all, Tom will be remembered as a loving husband and true partner to Carole, proud father, grandfather, and friend to so many. We will forever miss his sly humor, quick wit, searching intellect, and the twinkle in his eye.

What success I might have had in the advertising industry would, in a large part, be due to Tom's influence and friendship.

To the Shortlidge Family. Rolf Normann just called with the news of Tom's passing. We were colleagues and business partners in Chicago at Young & Rubicam and Hackenberg, Normann, Krivkovich & Partners. I'm recalling many amazing years of working with Tom, the most talented creative director-writer-art director-TV director-and all around good person in my experience. He will be remembered for his thoughtful aesthetic and his humanity. Sending my sympathy and heartfelt condolences, RB Hackenberg

I worked at Y&R and remember the day the agency was called into the conference room. Y&R had managed to hire a whole creative team from another agency and Tom was among them. Seems like yesterday. Tom always had a smile and an easy way about him. Those were the great days of advertising.

My cousin Tom was a very special man, building a career and life surrounded with beauty. Though many miles seperated us most of our lives, our Norwegian heritage and family traits are strong reminders of our what we both inherited from our mothers and grandparents. May he rest in peace.

I was a very minor player in Tom´s life, working with him in my 20´s at Y&R in the mid-1980s for just a couple of years. I remember sitting in Tom´s office watching him lay out C&B catalogs. His style was minimal and elegant while mine was English Arts & Crafts, but it was impossible not to admire the beauty in everything he did. And when I tried my hand at drawing (encouraged by our colleague, Mike Eakin) he was so complimentary. A compliment from him was one to treasure. My drawing is framed and I look at it everyday and always smile when I remember when he told me to "Keep drawing. It´s the best way to learn."

When I first came to Chicago from London in 1979 Tom took me under his wing, introducing me to people in the Chicago Advertising community and helping me to get my art direction career underway. It made a huge difference to me and I will be forever grateful.

I always enjoyed seeing Tom. At a party or gathering it was never just idle chit-chat with Tom, he was truly curious about what you were up to, especially any creative endeavors, and the conversation would naturally flow from subject to subject. He was warm, kind, and a pleasure to be around. Our deepest condolences to Carole and family.

Favorite memory: a great question. My memory of meeting him is the wry, subtle sense of humor. A very valued trait. And, I worked on a committee for the Chikaming CC yearbook and can attest to his meticulous attention. My heartfelt condolences to Carole, Tom and the entire family and friends network.
Sincere sympathy, Ellen Carnahan

Every ad or catalog he ever designed for Crate made me smile. And his logo design and packaging design made us visible in every major street and airport in America! Thank you. Tom´s quiet yet lasting mark on a company I loved still lives.

There are few that rise far above the mediocrity that are most, we have lost one of them. The world is a somewhat sadder place. Very sincere condolences to Carole and his children. Bob Turf
