William Athos Obituary

ATHOS--William J. M.D., age 78, at home in St. Petersburg, FL on September 30, 2008 from complications of Parkinson's Disease. Beloved husband of Irene (nee Koskinas) for 51 years. Loving father of Elizabeth Athos and Jeanne Athos-Adler. Fatherin-law to Dr. Michael A. Adler and William Figdor. Adored grandfather to Christopher and Alexandra Adler and Dmitri and Andrei Figdor. Born in Greece in 1929 to Persephone and John Athos, Dr. Athos emigrated to the U.S. at age seven and grew up in New York City. He was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School, Columbia College and SUNY Downstate Medical Center where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his internship, residency and New York Fellowship at St. Lukes Hospital. Dr. Athos served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was Physician to the Peace Corps Training Program at Columbia University. He enjoyed a long career practicing Internal Medicine in New York City, was devoted to his patients who adored him, and was affiliated with St. LukesRoosevelt Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine. He was voted one of New York Magazines Best Doctors in New York and he particularly treasured his award for Distinguished Service from the Salvation Army, having served as a consultant and volunteer for 25 years. His love, intellectual curiosity and wit will be sorely missed but his inspiration will remain. We will forever love and miss him. Friends may call at the Barrett Funeral Home, 148 Dean Dr., Tenafly, NJ on Friday 2-4 and 79pm. Funeral Service at St. John the Theologian Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Tenafly on Saturday 10am. Interment Brookside Cemetery, Englewood, NJ. Donations may be made to the Dr. William J. Dear Mrs. Athos,
I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Athos. He took such good care of our family for many years. He was a kind, caring, thoughtful, and intelligent doctor. He touched many lives and will always be remembered lovingly.
