WILLIAM CONWAY Obituary

CONWAY--William G. The Liz Claiborne & Art Ortenberg Foundation mourns the recent passing of our colleague, mentor and friend William G. Conway. As a member of our Advisory Board, Bill's deep knowledge and understanding of wildlife conservation helped guide our foundation's mission for nearly two decades. Bill was an accomplished ornithologist, zoologist and conservation biologist who began his career as a curator with the St. Louis Zoo. He served the New York Zoological Society for 43 years, expanded and rebuilt much of the Bronx Zoo, included the city zoos of Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn and effected the New York Zoological Society's evolution to the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), creating an international conservation organization that works in more than 50 countries. He retired as president of WCS in 1999. Bill's visionary influence helped shape wildlife conservation programs and leading zoos around the world. His lifelong commitment and eloquent advocacy for species conservation played a key role in informing and fulfilling the philanthropic priorities of Liz Claiborne, Art Ortenberg and their Foundation.
