WILLIAM WILLIAMS Obituary

WILLIAMS--William Magavern, 91, of White River Junction, VT, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2023, in the loving presence of his family. Mr. Williams served as headmaster of Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn from 1970 to 2000. During his tenure, he led the school's transition to coeducation and expansion. He is survived by his wife, the former Linda Grush, to whom he was married for 64 years, his three children, Diana, William Jr., and Sarah, and his two granddaughters, Isobel and Niulan. Mr. Williams received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Williams College in 1953, a Master of Arts in educational psychology from Columbia University in 1966, and an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Williams College in 1984. He was an educator, philosopher, and Renaissance man, and most of all a loving husband and father. His absence is a presence.

Before going to Poly Prep Mr. Williams was a much loved and respected member of the faculty at Riverdale where he also coached the wrestling team with extraordinary finesse and energy. Sincere condolences from Vieri Salvadori (154 lbs) class of 1961.
