BETSY BLAKE Obituary

BETSY JEAN MCLURE BLAKE Betsy Jean McLure Blake, age 57, died peacefully in her sleep on June 26, 2011. A long time resident of Opelika, Alabama, she was born on October 18, 1953. Her parents were the late Betty and Randy McLure. She is survived by her husband, George Blake; daughter, Elizabeth Brown; sister, Missy Magdon (Stan); brother, Roy McLure (Vicki); nephews, Turner Otwell, Taylor Otwell, and Jeff McLure; her aunt, Jean Marchetta and uncle, Joe Marchetta of Ohio; two cousins, Joey Marchetta (Julie) and Vince Marchetta (Betsy). She is also survived by her beloved long-time family friend, Ocie M. Jefferson (Sam). Betsy graduated from Opelika High School in 1971. She attended Judson College and completed her education at Auburn University, in 1974. After graduation, Betsy worked for WAUD in Auburn, AL, as Office Manager. Using her skills in sales and communication, she became a buyer for Computer Sciences Corporation in Falls Church, VA, and in January of 1980 accepted a job as Human Resources Supervisor with Data Technology Corporation, Opelika, Alabama. In 1986 she moved to Shape Global Technologies in Dadeville, AL, where she was Vice President of Sales from May 1986 until December 2000. She later moved to Vice President of Sales for Carthuplas, Inc., in Kennebunkport, Maine. When health issues dictated that Betsy give up her sales career with its long hours and constant travel, she focused on what she could do, rather than what she could no longer do. With her infectious smile, enthusiasm and tireless energy, she devoted herself to her Church and to the Opelika community. Betsy loved the Lord and began everyday with joy. She went on three mission trips to Honduras with the Baptist Church where she sponsored three Honduran children. She delighted in her participation in the Project Uplift youth mentoring program. She became a mediator registered on the Alabama State roster and aided in the settlement of court cases for the District and Family courts. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school, children's church, and Vacation Bible School, and became a yoga instructor and favorite teacher of the Silver Sneakers group at the Opelika Sportsplex. She was a member of longstanding of the Delphi Study Club and her programs on the lives of persons, such as Cleopatra and Lulu Buffett, were theatrical productions worthy of Broadway. Betsy had a nurturing heart for people and animals. She was a comforter to those in need and gave of herself without hesitation. She never forgot a birthday or missed an occasion, and her home was always open to her friends, both old and new. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and the many people whose lives she touched. A memorial service will be held at Opelika First Baptist Church on Wednesday, June 29, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Project Uplift, or to the First Baptist Church of Opelika youth ministries. Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements. www.jeffcoattrant.com

What an great lady. She was so wonderful to all of the Arvato family where we worked with her as a vendor rep for many years. She was such a blessing to our entire family and enjoyed coming to Opelika to visit, her home was always open and inviting to all. What a blessing she was as words cannot describe who she was to so many. Looking forward to seeing her in heaven some day....

I am so sad ~ even after all these years ~ to hear of Betsy's passing. Shame on me for not keeping in better touch with my Alabama roots and friends. The McClure family was such an important family in Opelika; I still remember their house there on the corner. I pray God's healing arms will wrap around those she left behind as she awaits our arrival in heaven.

The children in heaven have a wonderful new teacher. These new angels are fortunate to have such a person to teach them about our lives here on earth. Where we will miss her physical presence here, we will always have her presence in our hearts.

Betsy was such a genuine and generous person. I worked with Betsy at Shape and we used to room together while at various trade shows. There was never a dull moment with Betsy and she made everything fun! She was extremely good at what she did and I admired her for it. May the peace that passes all understanding be with the family at your great loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

What a shock to hear Betsy had passed away. My heart goes out to you.
I worked with Besty in the mid 70's at WAUD. She was such a great joy to work with. I will always remember the day she went with me to interview Seals and Crofts. We got an exclusive interview with them, when they had turned us down earlier. We got the interview in large part to Besty not talking no for an answer.

I have so very many fond memories of family gatherings with Betsy, from my childhood days... forward. From jumping out of the barn-loft into hay @ the farm, to eating oysters outside the trailor(with a dog named Ugly) when AU/Florida would gather on a bitter cold fall Sat. I remember hanging w/Betsy, her family/cousins when Alex. City/Opelika would play during our high school days. No matter the occasion, festive or not, Betsy was sure to light up the room w/her bigger than life SMILE! She loved her family, her friends and Betsy loved and lived her life with enthusiasm and courage. Our family will surely miss Betsy. No doubt that God has chosen a special angel . Betsy is one of my dearest friends. She always had depth of spirit and humor. I met her through work. She was in sales and I will never forget meeting her for the first time. Elizabeth and George - so sorry for your loss. I often think of Betsy and all that she taught me over our years of working together. Elizabeth:

I am so sorry to hear about Betsy. I worked for her for eight years at Shape South and learned so much from her. Working for her made me a stronger, more confident person, and that helped me so much in the last few years. Her laughter was so contagious and her zest for life made her fun to be around. You and your family are in my prayers and my heart is with you. God bless you.

Elizabeth:

I am so sorry to hear about Betsy. In the eight years I worked for her she taught me so many things, I think of her many times. She taught me how to not be so timid, and stand up for myself. These things have helped me so much in the past few years, and I have her to thank for that. She was special.

I was so sad to hear that Betsy passed away. She was a joy to be around. She always had a smile and words of encouragement. When I went to Silver Sneakers yesterday, all I could do was to look at her empty chair with tears in my eyes and know that she would want us to continue with our classes. You will be missed Betsy. My thoughts are with her family.
