Eugene Clothiaux Obituary

Dr. Eugene John Clothiaux, Professor of Physics at Auburn University, affectionately known as "Dr. C," died Thursday, May 10 at the age of 76. He finished teaching the classes he loved on Friday, turned in his final grades on Sunday, went for scheduled surgery to keep him going full steam on Monday, and quietly passed in the company of his family on Thursday. He was born in Kaplan, Louisiana, the youngest of five children. He received his B.S. in physics from the University of Louisiana at Layfayette, attended Tulane University, received is M.S. in mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh, and earned his PhD in physics at New Mexico State University. Eugene's passions were teaching and research, and neither his family, nor colleagues, nor students were spared his enthusiasm. Auburn University provided the setting and community that supported and nurtured him for 37 years. At home, he enjoyed the companionship of his wife, Clara, a revolving door of kids and grandkids, an adoring cat, and a healthy supply of crawfish etouffee. The constancy of his fig tree transplanted from his Louisiana home kept him close to his roots. His is survived by Clara, his wife of 52 years, three sons, Pierre, Eugene "Butch", and John; three daughters, Anne, Monica and Jeanne-Annie; nine grandchildren, Dominique, Michael, Claire, Philip, Caroline, Daniel, Josh, Sophie, and Anabelle; sister, Marguerite, and brother, Harry. He was preceded in death by two brothers. Visitation will be held at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Sunday. The funeral service will be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Monday at 10:00 a.m. with contemplative visitation held prior to the service at 9:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Michael's Catholic Church or East Alabama Medical Center Foundation. Dr. Clothiaux was a mentor and friend to my father, Thomas Rokoske, who earned his PhD under Dr. Clothiaux's tutelage in the early 1970's. My sympathy goes out to the entire Clothiaux family.

Daer Mrs. Clothiaux,

I am very saddened to hear of your husbands death. He was my favorite physics instructor. I am very grateful he agreed to serve on my doctoral committee in 2004. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Mrs. Clothiaux,
I was so sad to hear of Dr. Clothiaux's passing. My son had him as his Physics Honors Instructor and said he was one of the best professors he had ever had. Please know that many heartfelt prayers are being said for you and your family.

Dear Clara,

We mourn the loss of one of our best friends, a most kind, gentle man of uncommon intellect. We feel truly honored to have known him. He and you have done so much for us and our children... We will remain grateful to both of you as long as we shall live. Please accept our heartfelt sympathy in this hour of grief. May it help you to know that our thoughts are with you.

Dear Clothiaux family;

I think some of you know what Sylvia, I call her mother, and I think - thought - still think, of your family. We do love your Mom and truly loved Dr C.. He was a great man, teacher, caring friend to his students, colleagues, church, anyone who was in need and he could assist them he did. I will always continue to have great respect for him and will look forward to being with him again "over there when I cross the RIVER!" I know you will miss him greatly but please think of all the wonderful memories he has left for each of you. I just wish I had been able to be around him more during our years at Auburn.

Butch, know that I think of you often and trust you are doing well?

Mrs. C., we love and respect you and know that you love God and people, especially those students who have the privilege of being yours. Bless you,

Claude and Sylvia Gosset
