Gregory McCord Obituary

Gregory "Greg" Warren McCord

July 24, 1965 - September 7, 2022

Greg McCord, of Houston, TX, was born on July 24, 1965, in Sheffield, AL to Brenda and Warren McCord. He spent most of his childhood in Auburn, AL, with exception of the three years his father spent in the Army at Ft. McClellan, AL. His family moved back to Auburn in 1972 where he attended public schools, graduating from Auburn High School in 1983. Greg received a BS in Accounting and a Masters in Accounting with an emphasis in Taxation from Auburn University before beginning his successful career in corporate tax accounting. He also was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

Greg was a partner in KPMG's Houston Federal Tax practice as well as led its Houston Business Unit's Tax Transformation Services group. He was also a member of KPMG's national tax transformation and technology services team. During his more than 21 years of experience in both public accounting and industry, in addition to his positions with KMPG, Greg was Vice President of tax for two publicly traded U.S. multinational companies. He also held senior level positions with GE and with another large international public accounting firm.

However, what Greg was most proud of were his two boys, Josh, a sophomore at Auburn University and Daniel, a junior at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory High School in Houston. He celebrated their accomplishments and enjoyed their company.

Not only did Greg work hard and successfully, he played the same way. He loved the outdoors and respected nature. As a boy, he relished spending as much of his summers on Shoals Creek and Wilson Lake as possible. His family lived in the Willow Creek neighborhood of Auburn and he spent most of his out of school waking hours on the neighborhood lake. He caught several trophy bass from that lake to include a nine pounder near Dr. Willie Webb's rose bushes on the shoreline of his property. Greg and Jim Folmar would also trap muskrats and other "swamp animals" and practice their taxidermy skills in their parents' garages. Greg fished wherever he went. When he traveled overseas for his work, he would carry his fishing rod with him. While on an extended assignment in England he would ride the train with his fishing gear to the outskirts of London on weekends to fly fish. He could fish a jelly worm like the pros and he learned to tie his own flies.

Hunting was another of Greg's passions. He hunted all over the U.S., but he especially loved Africa. He took numerous safari trips to that continent. He talked more about the people and the beauty of the places he hunted than he did about the game.

Greg was also an avid reader and an excellent gourmet cook. His personal library contained hundreds of books. He also collected cook books and cooked traditional and exotic dishes.

Greg had an enthusiastic and gregarious personality. He made friends wherever he went and was loyal and generous. He contributed to his community in many ways, including serving on the boards of The Archaeological Institute of America-Houston Society and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. His love for Auburn University and the Auburn community was calling him back. His next goal was to retire and return "home" to Auburn.

Greg is survived by his wife, Carolina Escobar McCord of Houston and his two sons, Joshua Paul McCord, Auburn University, AL and Daniel Alfonso McCord, Houston; his mother and father, Brenda and Warren McCord, Auburn. AL, his sister Michele Krista (Mathew), Dothan AL, four aunts and uncles, four cousins, seven nieces and nephews and one grand niece and two grand nephews.

A funeral service will be held at Bradshaw-Carter Funeral Home, 1734 West Alabama Street, Houston, TX at 1:00 PM on Monday, September 12, 2022, with Minister Sammy Crosby, officiating. Visitation will be at 11:00 AM-1:00 PM prior to the 1:00 PM service.

A memorial service will be held in Auburn, at a place where Greg spent a lot of time growing up, Auburn First Baptist Church, at 1:00 PM on Thursday, September 15, 2022, Dr. Tripp Martin officiating. Visitation will follow in Fellowship Hall.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity of your choice.
