JANET SMITH Obituary

JANET C. SMITH Janet C. Smith, 80 years old, longtime resident of Signal Mountain, TN passed away peacefully on Monday February 1, 2010 at Erlanger Hospital. She was born in Seattle, graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Language Arts and spoke five languages fluently. After college, she entered the foreign service of the United States Department of State serving in Paris and Rio de Janeiro. While stationed in Brazil, she married James T. Smith Jr. of Columbus Georgia, who was employed by Dupont do Brazil. Jim and Janet moved to Signal Mountain, in 1962 where she was an active member of the Chattanooga and Signal Mountain communities. She served as president of the Signal Mountain Women's Guild and was a committed and longtime member of Centenary United Methodist Church and the Morgan Sunday School Class. She enjoyed traveling extensively, playing bridge, and volunteering in the community. She was involved in the Children's International Summer Village Program leading tours to France, Portugal, Italy and Mexico. She was a member of the National Kidney Foundation and locally was known for giving support and encouragement to new patients on dialysis. Janet is preceded in death by her parents, Aspasio and Eletta Cecchi. She is survived by her husband with whom she was married for 53 years, James T. Smith Jr. of Signal Mountain and their two sons, James T. Smith III (Denise) of Mobile, AL and Jeffrey R. Smith (Bridget) and two grandsons Jeffrey and Stephen of Auburn, AL. She is also survived by her sister Adrienne Romano (James J.), and nephew James P. Romano of Hixson, TN, and her nephew, Admiral Steven Romano (Deborah) of Arlington VA. She is survived by her sister in law Betty Lott (Robert) of Tuscaloosa, AL and their four children, Robert Lott (Leslie) of Huntsville, AL, James Lott of Tuscaloosa, AL, Margaret Schroeder (Carl) of Olympia, WA and Mary Chedid of Tampa, FL. In addition, she is survived by her sister in law Lou Johnson and her daughters Karen Johnson of Albany GA, Fontaine Gervasi and Mary Allen (Andy) of Winston Salem, NC. Finally, she is survived by numerous great nieces and nephews. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that contributions are made to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, 9221 Ward Parkway, Suite 400 Kansas City, Missouri 64114-336, First Centenary United Methodist Church, 419 McCallie Avenue, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37402 or a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at First Centenary United Methodist Church on Sunday February 7, 2010 at 2 p.m. with visitation following the service. Dr. David Harr will be conducting the service.
