Mark Oliver Obituary

Mark David Oliver, MD of Ocala, Florida was born in Orange, TX on May 10, 1964 and peacefully passed away on September 25, 2023 at the age of 59. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sherry Meyers Elms. He is survived by his Fiancée, Ashley Morris and his children Jessica Oliver Overfelt (Matt), Samantha Oliver, Andrew Oliver, Malia Oliver and Carson Oliver as well as his grandchildren Evelyn and Wilson Overfelt and Marli Brown. He is also survived by his father William Oliver (Jan) and step-father, Chuck Elmes.

Mark grew up in Opelika, Alabama and graduated from Opelika High School. He went on to graduate from Auburn University with a degree in Biochemistry and was accepted into the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine where he received his medical degree in 1990. Mark was a member of Ocala Neurosurgical Center where he was in practice for approximately 25 years. Mark treasured the support of his family through his many years of training and a high point of his career was conducting a complex, successful surgery on his grandfather. Mark displayed compassion and concern for his patients and was an asset to the medical profession.

Mark remained an avid Auburn Football fan through the years and regularly attended games. His children were very interested in athletics and Mark always managed to attend their competitions. He loved animals which was evidenced by his care and affection for the family dogs. He had varied interests which included coin collecting, historic guns and rare watches. Mark loved his family unconditionally and treasured his relationships with his friends and coworkers.

During the period of his medical treatment at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Mark had a personal conversation with his father. It was the type of conversation which Mark always had with his father when something significant was about to happen. Mark told his father that he had been looking for wedding rings for Ashley and wanted to marry her after being discharged from the hospital. After proposing the next day, their plans to marry were complete. Mark was very happy with Ashley during their entire relationship and, according to Mark, she was the love of his life.

An intimate memorial service was held on October 1st in Ocala. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 7 at 11:00 am at The Church of the Springs in Ocala. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests you donate to the charity of your choice.

Dr. Oliver was a wonderful surgeon and I will surely miss him as with others. He was the surgeon for four of my family members and myself. Dr. Oliver was fantastic and very caring for all who came to him.

I count myself a very lucky guy having known Dr Oliver, I had a great opportunity to work with him as a nurse, and then I got to see him as a dad. I umpired softball at Shocker Park in Ocala, and for "Travel Ball", for his daughters. As good of a neurosurgeon as he was, and he was great, is how good he was to his girls on the softball field. One time I went to Tampa to umpire a tournament, the catcher got into position behind the home plate. I bellowed out the first pitch as a "steeerrriiike"! The young lady catcher was his eldest daughter. She stopped, looked back at me. Starring at me, she said, ".....OMG, 'Blue' is that you?" Everyone was surprised to see each other randomly over 100 miles from home. Great times, great memories, and a great man.

Dr Oliver performed my first back surgery in 2001. I was able to continue my career as a firefighter with the City Of Ocala due to his treatment. I went to the website to get the office number and was shocked to see the sad news. My condolences to all his family.

I'm a Registered Nurse and knew of Dr. Oliver through the Medical community. It wasn't until I was a patient of his that I met him. People would joke with me and say "what do you call a RN that has had back surgery.... unemployed!" Well not me. I am still employed and full functioning thanks to Dr. Oliver! Much love, hugs and prayers to his family and loved ones!

There are so many moments that I was blessed to share with Dr. Oliver, he taught me so much about brain tumors, back and neck surgeries both as a nurse working with his post op patients as well as when I worked with him in the OR. I remember one case in which seemed almost devastating and with his expertise he turned it around QUICKLY and that case came out positive. I respect this man for his knowledge and his caring bedside manner. He also helped my sister many years ago when she was having medical complications I was not familar with and he actually ended up saving her life. I remember telling him about me being attacked by a rabbid fox and he laughed and said he would have helped me but..."He would pay to have it on DVD" lol Another time I asked him what would cause me not to be able to lift my arm and he laughed and said "Well were you shot in it", lol his sense of humor was so great. I remember him trying to get the golf ball on the tee in the globe for the "Golf ball hall of fame from the Neuro Unit at ORMC" I will miss your laughter and your willingness to give your knowledge without hesitation. I was truly blessed to know you. REST IN PEACE
