Jack Mathis Obituary

ODESSA Jack Mathis Jr., age 84, was born July 29, 1924, to Jack and Judith Mathis in Hatchell, Texas.

Jack left the Hospice House peacefully on Monday, May 4, 2009, to join his Lord and Savior.

Jack graduated from Ballinger High school in 1942. He then proudly served his country in the Army Corp of engineering in Burma China and India until his discharge in 1946. He then moved to Odessa and resided in Mellie Van Horn's boarding house. It was only appropriate that this was also his final resting place. It was during this time that Jack met the love of his life, Ileta (Leta) Thompson. They were married in 1948.

After moving to Odessa, Jack started working for the Gulf Oil Corporation. He later went to work as a salesman for Donham Oil Tool Company. He retired from DOTCO in 1989. One of Jack's greatest joys was to go walking at the mall with Leta and then to meet up with his "coffee buddies" and discuss the old oilfield days.

Jack is survived by his wife of 61 years, Leta Mathis; son, Darryl Mathis and his wife Kathy of Katy, Texas; daughter, Debbie Gooch and her husband Terry of Odessa; sister, Judy West of Dallas; brother, Bob Mathis of Thorndale; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews as well as many friends.

The family will receive visitors at Frank W. Wilson funeral home on Wednesday evening, May 6, 2009, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Sherwood Baptist Church with Ivy Shelton and Mark Hewitt officiating.

A military interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services are entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Thanks to the staff at the Hospice House and to the nursing staff on the 3rd and 4th floor at ORMC.

Memorials may be made to Hospice House, 903 N. Sam Houston Odessa, Texas, 79761.

Dear Leta & family,

We were very saddened to hear about Jack's death. He will be missed by many.

Psalm 23 is associated with death, but it has a much deeper meaning; for it's a beautiful promise of everlasting life and renewal. It assures us that even in death we'll not be alone, that God will be there to lead us home and give us comfort. It's a vow that there's nothing to fear for great things await us in heaven. Truly, this prayer should lend
hope and comfort to all who hear it.

You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
