Sue Mullins Obituary
MONAHANS Sue A. Mullins, age 78, ended her long and courageous battle with cancer on June 20, 2013, in Grandfalls, TX, surrounded by her family and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the Grandfalls School Auditorium in Grandfalls.
Sue Allajane Seymour Mullins was born May 26, 1935, in Kerrville, TX, to Roy & Ellen Seymour. She married Morris (Moon) Mullins on April 4, 1953, in Kerrville, and together they raised 3 boys, Mike, James & Roger.
In 1967, Moon moved his family to Royalty from Brownwood, TX. Sue always said it was a good thing they arrived during the night, because when she saw her yard, she almost divorced him! It didn't take her long to fall in love with this area and the people. Sue became very active in the community & school district. She became an EMT and Fire Fighter for the Grandfalls Volunteer Fire Department in the late 1960's and remained an active member throughout her life. In the early years she worked at the Royalty Post Office, helped Eleanor at Eudaly's Food Store on several occasions and was a member of the Grandfalls Chamber of Commerce for many years. As time allowed, Sue could be found at the Corner Drug Store, "socializing."
In the early 1970's, she and Moon opened Sue's Restaurant and with the help of family it became a social hub for many locals to have a great cup of coffee over in depth discussions. With the CB radio always turned on, and the handles "Ma & Pa Kettle" the airwaves lead many travelers to detour though Grandfalls for some great food and fellowship. Sue was elected Justice of the Peace for Ward County during this same time and gave a stern "momma" type lecture to those that were unfortunate enough to get caught speeding or other violations. She especially enjoyed those special moments when she had the privilege of performing a wedding ceremony. Sue always told the couple she didn't "tie slip knots." She regretted she didn't tie some of those tight enough. She and Moon opened their home to several family members and non-family members that were in need of a place to call home many times throughout the years, the door was always open.
Following Moon's battle with cancer & his death in June of 1984, Sue moved back to Kerrville and took a position with the State Hospital. Sadly, while caring for a patient she suffered a back injury that required surgery & she returned home to Grandfalls with her family and friends. From then on, her life style had to change and her health began to fail. When her Mother & stepfather, Leslie made the decision to move to Grandfalls from Kerrville, they shared a home for several years, helping each other out with their needs.
Sue had a huge loving heart that never met a stranger, she was the type person that could become a close friend to anyone from a young child to an older adult and always have something to talk about. She always made everyone feel at ease, was a great listener, and gave sound advice.
Sue's battle with cancer began in 2009, which she fought long and hard while staying positive until her very last breath.
