GERARD JOHN, 56
Ocala - Gerard John Prevete, 56, of Ocala, FL, passed away on Monday, March 19, 2012 in Ocala. He moved here 24 years ago from Bellport, New York. Gerard was a member of St. Jude Catholic Community of Ocala where he served as a catechist. Gerard was a history teacher having taught in Marion County for 23 years; the last 13 years at Belleview High School. He had the reputation of being an exceptional teacher. Gerard also enjoyed golfing; was a voracious reader and "loved to learn". He was a lifelong children's advocate. He was preceded in death by his father Benjamin W. Prevete. Gerard is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Michele of Ocala; children Cheryl-Lynne Prevete and Adam G. Prevete, both of Virginia Beach, VA and Peter B. Prevete of Ocala; brother-in-law, Robert A. Inglese of Ocala; sister-in-law Toni George (David) of Philomath, OR and nieces Alex and Jessie. A Mass will be celebrated at St. Jude Catholic Community, Ocala at a later date. Condolences may be expressed at www.hiers-baxley.com.

Michelle so sorry for your loss. I knew Gerard from when we were kids growing up in Lindenhurst. I was friends with Gerards sister Cathy and my mom was friends with his mom Kitty. every time i came to his class he would always ask how my day was or how my weekend was an he would ask if i grew any over the weekend :) we always had fun in class one time in class we used our cell phones to pop popcorn it didn't really work but it as still fun. Mr.Prevete had a different way of teaching than most of the teachers at BHS he would be teaching us vocab or something else in our book and then it would remind him of something from his past so we would spend the rest of class with him telling us stories of his past. He was always telling us to try our best at whatever we do in life and to follow our dreams. He was one of the few teaches that made senior year fun and i knew if i needed someone to talk to he would be there to help out. R.I.P Mr.Prevete

Gerry spent his early teaching years at Belleview-Santos and was always ready with a smile or a helping hand. He supported his students and as the MEA president, his teachers. He was a great friend and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Gerry had a tackle box full of stories that he frequently shared with his students and fellow coworkers. He hoped these experiences would be inspirational, and meaningful to the right person. Gerry encouraged me to become a teacher. Thank you Gerry, for your kind words and sense of humor.

mr.prevete was an amazing man, he saw the world in a different light an could tell people great an facinating stories.he spoke of his family in great an softing ways. he was a an awesome teacher that loved an enjoyed teaching young minds an sharing his knowledge with everyone that would sit and listen.i shared many stories with him as well as others did on times an times again. he did not past with momories of little but with great momories of his friends an family. to me he was not a teacher but he was a great,powerful, an motivating person to lots of people an he shall be remembered through time an history to come,an we bid him a goodbye an hope to see him again one day to here more of his stories. now its time for someone else to here his stories now.goodby mr.prevete we'll miss u forever

Gerry was a great friend and colleague. BHS will never be the same. He always had a unique and positive way of looking at things. I'm going to miss our talks and the occasional lunch together. God bless you and your family.

I was one of Mr. Prevete's students at lake weir middle. This man was the best teacher i ever had. He will be missed. My deepest sympathy to his family. Walk with GOD my friend.

It is often said that a teacher touches the lives of children. Mr,. Prevete was our daughter's softball coach and he had a great impact on her life. We will always remember his support and dedication to her and the sport. May God Bless all of you at this most difficult time.

I burn a candle in remembrance. I will always remember the frantic HELP requests. I will miss you big pappa. You have been the lighthouse that kept me grounded. Zecheriah will miss you. Mr. Prevete was my soccer coach and friend. He provided us students with a safe place. He made it known that he was available if ever needed or wanted. I am so sad to hear of his passing. He was an amazing person and loved his family more than anything. Always bragging and always happy. May he rest in peace. I pray for his family during this difficult time.

Mr. P., as he was called at Belleview-Santos, was an exceptional teacher and a friend. I will always remember the Super Bowl Party at his house.

Gerry was an amazing man and an angel on Earth. He always had a kind word and encouragement, even in the darkest of hours. It is hard to lose such an amazing man, but God needed him to share his love with the world. His spirit and love will live on for generations to come. Coach Prevete was such an inspiration...i had the privelage to know him as a coach. I enjoyed many conversations with him both on and off the field. It was always a joy to spend time with coach p...he wanted everyone on his team to excel and encouraged us to succeed. I got to know both of his sons and send much condolences to the family. We have lost a great teacher and supporter.

Gerry and I worked together at Lake Weir Middle School a number of years ago. Not only was he wonderful with the kids, he was a kind man with a gentle spirit and a terrific laugh. He will be sorely missed.
