Today we sadly mourn the passing of Chris. It's difficult to find words to express the various emotions, thoughts, and unfortunately, the questions going through my mind. It would be fruitless to spend my time attempting to answer those questions.
I would rather spend the days ahead celebrating his life and what he meant to each of us. He cherished his two beautiful grandchildren....Timothy, whom he always referred to as papa's boy, and Ariana, which he lovingly called Rosie. It will be through our shared memories of Chris that they will know their Papa.
I had forgotten some of those memories, and the role he had played in each of our lives, until we all sat down together a few days ago. We discussed his love for the Carolina Gamecocks, sometimes just to aggravate us Ohio State fans, and we talked about his love of a great BBQ with only Maurice's BBQ sauce.
Pam will always recall many loving, tender moments. Daniel and Josh were recalling the many basketball games in the back yard, while Christopher recalled the wrestling matches in the basement with his dad and Ben. Melissa talked of his love for little Timmy. Haley recalled his half shaved head when he woke up her and her girlfriend for a laugh, and that each trip to charleston he would return with a palm frond rose for her. Mommom recalled how he would stop to see her at Manor Care with his cup of coffee in hand, and lay on her bed, sometimes falling asleep. We talked about his trips home to Barberton with his sack of goodies for all the nieces and nephews...they referred to him as the Carolina Claus. He and Joe were known as the Carolina connection for many years. We remembered one trip in particular that we took to Myrtle Beach S.C. We had eight teenagers accompany us. Rather than just meet us at the beach Chris insisted on us spending a few days with him prior to going. He loved a big party, and a big party it was because he made certain. At the beach we visited pier 14, his favorite place. I believe our pictures are probably still on the wall depicting patrons that are not welcome back. Something about lots of lemon drops and a bread fight in the restaurant in which we engaged the waitresses. We were looking at pictures from a few weeks ago at a family picnic where Chris was riding his two grandchildren around on the John Deere mower, laughing and having a blast. Of course we made certain that the blades were turned off.
Chris loved to fix anything from cars to household projects. He was scheduled to fix Mark's fence, put a storm door in for me, and work on Joey's car. He loved coming to your house and helping out. He had worked for Flex Lawn upon his return from S.C. He has been lovingly known as uncle Pablo since. Ben would say that the equipment never looked so good. This spring, while he was employed at giant eagle I found him at the garage early int he morning maintenancing the equipment and asked him why he was there. He merely said, have you seen this equipment lately? That was him. Always wanting to help and be a part of things.
I personally choose to remember our many heartfelt talks on the deck, the way we were always referred to as the two little ones, (which generally meant we got in trouble together), and our afternoon lunch dates in which we'd have a beer and promise each other that we wouldn't tell mom.
Rest in peace Chris, knowing that we will keep your memories alive so that your grandchildren with know their Papa. I love you
Your Big Sis

My dear family, my heart breaks knowing your sorrow. Take comfort in God's grace. Chris will always be close in our hearts and memories and in the smiles of his children. He is now at peace but will be missed every second of every day. He loved you all with everything he was. With time I pray our tears will dry and be replaced by a smile when we think of him. Love lasts forever, the pain and sadness doesn't. Keep good memories with your bond as a family and he will always be there with you. The strength you see in each other will pull you through. I love you all.
