A Requiem Mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2002, at the Queen of the Holy Rosary Church in Vienna, Ohio, for Emmett C. Shaffer Jr., retired lieutenant colonel, U.S. Army, of 1954 Warner Rd. N.E., Brookfield, Ohio, who passed away Thursday, May 2, 2002, at 11:09 p.m.
Lt. Col. Shaffer was born in Campbell, Ohio, on Aug. 24, 1925, the son of Emmett C. Sr. and Agnes (McCabe) Shaffer. He prac ticed pro bono law and was a world traveler, having traveled to over 61 countries in addition to our 50 states.
Prior to the Korean War, he worked as a locomotive fireman on the New York Central Railroad, as a brakeman on the P & L.E. Railroad, a tower operator on the Erie Rail road, and as a steelworker at the Republic Steel Co. in Youngstown, Ohio. While attending South High School in Youngstown in 1943, he worked at the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co.
He enjoyed gardening, reading, and local and Civil War history. He was a 1952 B.A. summa cum laude graduate from Youngstown College, where he was honored with a Youngstown College Scholastic pin and was a member of "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities." Lt. Col. Shaffer received his Master of Arts degree from Youngstown State University in 1975 and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Akron School of Law in 1979. He also attended graduate courses at the University of Texas in El Paso, New York University, University College in Richmond, Va., Notre Dame Uni versity School of Law at the London School of Economics in London, England, and graduated from the Command and General Staff Col lege in Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
Lt. Col. Shaffer's military career of over 20 years included service in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. While in the military, he was decorated with a Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster, an Air Medal, Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Silver Star, Combat In fantry Badge, Joint Service Com mendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Vietnamese Service Medal with two campaign stars, and several other campaign and service medals.
He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, a charter member of the University of Akron School of Law Dean's Club, American Bar Association, Trumbull County Bar Association, Mahoning Valley Historical Society, Knights of Columbus, Third Degree Council 638, in El Paso, Texas, a charter member of the Queen of the Holy Rosary Church in Vienna, F.H. Buhl Men's Club in Sharon, Pa., Who's Who International, and a Civil War round-table discussion group in Youngstown.
Lt. Col. Shaffer is survived by his wife, the former Florence Fitch; a daughter, Florence L. Diorio, Doctor of Philosophy in Education, of Green, Ohio; sons, Lt. Col. Emmett C. Shaffer III, U.S. Army, Ft. Camp bell, Ky., and Lt. Col. Donald L. Shaffer, U.S. Air Force, Charleston A.F.B., S.C.; a sister, Nelma Leslie of Poland, Ohio; a brother, C. Kenneth Shaffer of Canfield, Ohio; and six grandchildren. His parents, and a sister, Millicent Conrecode, preceded him in death.
