Eugene H. Auber (Gene), and known to my children as (Genie) was born on May 2 1925; his parents were Margarite & Edwin Auber. Gene he had a twin brother Ed who preceded him in death. He also has a sister ~ Virginia, she was not able to be here today. Gene spent his youth between Akron Ohio and Mississippi. Gene was part of the “Greatest Generation”; he served in World War II in the US Navy. Gene lived the history of WWII, he was stationed on a ship that was sent into the Harbors of Normandy, his ships roll was to distract the Germans and have them shoot at them; so the soldiers on the landing craft could make it safely into the harbor. Gene recalled to me the following story, during the invasion; he and a few of his fellow sailors decide to go top side to see what was going on. With in five minutes German shells had landed in front of him and on the other side of the ship. They quickly decided that the engine room was much safer place to be so they retreated to the engine room. He remarked that He didn’t want to see the shell coming that may sink the ship. After serving in D-Day Gene was shipped to the Pacific Theater he was involved in many landings as the allies leap frog around the Pacific, as they defeated Japan. Gene was on another ship that was involved in the Iwo Jima invasion task force. He was reminiscing to me about one day as the battle raged on the island all the ships in the harbor horns began to sound off, he went top side in time to see the Second Flag go up over Iwo Jima. Gene had an incredible and formable experience at such a young age that guided the rest of his life. After leaving the Navy, Gene joined the Akron Fire Department where he spent the better part of 30 years serving the citizens of Akron. Gene spoke fondly of his time as a Fire Fighter, he told me stories of how in the winter fighting fires they would often times be unable to move because the water that they were pouring over the fire would often spray back on them and it would literally freeze on their clothes. Gene spent most of his adult life in service to his country, putting his life on the line so that others could live, and my family and I are deeply honored by his service, and sacrifice. In 1961 Gene founded Auber Insurance which is still in business today. Gene was an innovator, I recall his wife Lou remarking that often times Gene would work late at the office cold calling people to provide them insurance. This was before the days when cold calling became a normal selling tool. As I looked through the memories he had photographed over the years it struck me that their were three themes that stood out:
1. He loved his wife Lucille and would do anything for her.
2. He loved his Family, there were many pictures of the kids swimming in their pool, his children and grand children were in many of the pictures and the happiness they brought him was obvious by the huge smile on his face.
3. The only thing in Gene’s life that rivaled his Family was his love for Cars, not just any cars; Buicks were his passion. Gene restored many Old Buicks to better then original. He was a master at upholstery; he would tear a car down to the frame and restore it with all the love and passion only he could deliver. To demonstrate the passion he had and the detail he went through and how particular he was. Gene and a good friend of his Curt decided to take a road trip in a 1929 Buick to Indianapolis Indiana. The way I remember the story; after returning from Indy, he was washing his car the next day and notice that their were stone chips in the front grill and the fenders. That Winter Gene disassembled the car stripped it down, had it repainted and reassembled it. So by spring it was once again restored to better than perfect condition. Gene has three cars that are in Museums around the world. Their is one in Paris France, Switzerland, and Toronto Canada. That is his testament to his dedication to perfection when he restored his beloved old Buicks.
Gene loved his family and especially his wife and grandchildren, as I looked through the pictures it were obvious by the smile on his face the glint in his eyes, showed how proud and how much he loved them. I often tell friends and co-workers about the incredible life Gene lived, he is loved by his family, and will be truly missed but certainly not forgotten. It was an honor and a privileged to be his Son-in Law. And I will miss him.

Genie ~ Where do I start....you were one of the best things that ever came into my life. You accepted me as your very own daughter and loved me unconditionally. When I got married, it was you who walked me down the aisle. You looked so handsome. When Mark and I had children ~ they were YOUR grandchildren. What would I ever have done without your guidance and love. Your memory will forever be Eternal. I will always love you....Chris
