George Platis Obituary

George J. Platis, 81, passed away December 11, 2010.

Born in Akron, Ohio on July 13, 1929, he attended East High School and the University of Akron, graduating with a degree in business. He was a gifted athlete lettering in football, basketball, and track. After college, he served in the U.S. Air Force. Once he had completed his military service, George joined Goodyear Tire where he spent his entire career, retiring after 44 years. One of his fondest memories of Goodyear was receiving the Litchfield Award in 1956. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church, AHEPA, and The Glenn E Rogers Memorial Golf League. He was an avid golfer and a staunch competitor!. He loved coaching youth football and telling ``Goodyear' stories. Those stories will be missed.

Preceded in death by his parents, James and Christina Platis; and his uncle, Nick Platis; he is survived by his loving family; wife of 32 years and best friend, Ann; sons, James, George, Gary, Gregory, and Christopher (Michele) Platis; daughter, Jeannie (Tony) Roos; sister, Mary Kapenekas; step daughters, Vicki Oravec, and Sandra (Michael) Summers; step grandsons, Michael and Matthew Summers; nieces, Kris Kapenekas, Zoe (John) Kapenekas; nephew, John (Ingr) Kapenekas and many other dear relatives and friends.

Visitation Thursday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hecker Funeral Home, 13151 Cleveland Ave. N.W., Uniontown, Ohio. Funeral services will be held Friday, 11 a.m. at Temple Baptist Church with Pastor Glenn Rogers officiating. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Memorials may be made to Temple Baptist Church, P.O. Box 181, Green, Ohio 44232, or charity of choice. (Hecker, 330-699-2600)

Ann, you would be surprised at how often I think of you and George. We had some great times bowling and you helped me through a difficult time. George was great man in my eyes and behind every great man - there is a woman. That woman is YOU.
