James Smith Obituary
Jim was born September 23, 1921 in Kenmore, Ohio to William C. and Leatha May Smith. He retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.after 25 plus years of service. He was a previous member of Park United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School superintendent. Jim was an active member of Goss Memorial Church for over 35 years. He enjoyed volunteering at Haven of Rest Ministries and at Pleasant View Nursing Home.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert W. Smith, and his wife of 66 years, Shirley. He is survived by his daughter, Jane (David) Thompson of New Franklin; son, James C. (Irene) Smith of Pawtucket, R.I.; grandchildren, Kathleen (Dan) Carneal, Jennifer (Paul) Rucker, James (Coleen) Smith, and Jake Smith; great-grandchildren, Jimmy, Joey, Monica and Kyle Smith of Rhode Island, Riley Smith of Massachusetts, Emily Rucker and Jayce Carneal, both of New Franklin; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends may call at the Bacher Funeral Home, 3326 Manchester Rd. on Monday, August 24, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. with services following at 11 a.m. with Pastor Bud Couts officiating. Interment at Greenlawn Memorial Park. If desired, donations may be made to Haven of Rest Ministries, 175 E. Market St, P.O. Box 547, Akron, Ohio 44309-0547. I was a secretary at Goss Memorial from 1994 to 2008. I was in the King's Herald class along with Jim and Shirley. I still have a small paper that Shirley had Bible verses on it when I was diagnosed with lupus. Both Jim and Shirley were devoted to their religion. I was sorry that we didn't get to attend Jim's funeral but we didn't know about it until it was over. Out deepest condolences to all of the family.
