Joseph Labay Obituary

``THEN AND NOW'

Joseph P. Labay, Sr.

Joseph P. Labay, Sr., who was born in Akron, Ohio on January 15th, 1926, passed away June 18, 2011, at Akron City Hospital.

Joe was a lifelong resident of Akron, Ohio, attended Hower Vocational High School, and worked at the family business, Johnny's Auto and Truck Towing, where he was part-owner.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Betty (Barry); parents, Johnny and Pauline Labay; brother, John Labay, Jr. and his wife, Ruth; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard Deathe, Steve Barry, Walter Johnson, and Rita Friddle.

During World War II, Joe served in the European Theater of Operations. He was attached to Company D, 311th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry (Lightning) Division, as a Sgt., where he supervised the control, coordination, and tactical employment of a mortar section.

He was a member St. Matthew's Parish. Other memberships include the Canton American Legion Post 44, the Akron American Legion Post 209, VFW Post 3383, the Fraternal Order of Police Association, and the Operating Engineers Local #18. Joe would faithfully attend the 78th Lightning Division military reunions, which he enjoyed very much.

His survivors include sons, Joseph P. Labay, Jr. (Bonnie Fordham), John Thomas Labay; grandsons, Ryan J. Labay, Mark A. Labay, Joseph P. Labay, III; great-grandchildren, Destiny R. Labay, Mark A. Labay, II; brother; Stephen Labay (Dottie); sisters, Babe Davis (Chuck), Marian Deathe; sisters-in-law, Ilene Barry, Margaret Johnson; and many dear nieces, nephews, and friends, including those at the New Era Restaurant where he spent his Friday evenings enjoying dinner with his family.

Calling hours will be held TODAY, June 22, 2011, from 5 until 8 p.m. at Dunn-Quigley Funeral Home (811 Grant St.), where Father Michael Williamson will officiate at funeral service on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Mount Peace Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Valor Home for Homeless Veterans, P.O. Box 7498, Akron, Ohio 44306.
