Lori Schulbaum Obituary

Lori Collin Bland Schulbaum, the granddaughter of the late Morris and Vivian Riser Riggins, died peacefully at her home in Washington, D.C. on May 17, 2010.

Born in Akron, Ohio on August 21, 1958, she began school at George Barber Elementary before moving to Washington, D.C. in 1969. After attending Baldwin-Wallace College (Berea, Ohio) for two years, she then transferred to North Carolina School of the Arts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) receiving a bachelor of arts degree in 1982. Lori moved to New York City to pursue an acting career and met David Schulbaum whom she married in 1985. The couple subsequently established a home in Washington, D.C. and started their family. When the youngest child began school, the school also employed Lori as a teaching assistant which, in addition to instructional activity, allowed her to apply her training in theater and her natural talent in arts and crafts. During this period she also developed a passion for flower gardening with particular concern for the natural habitat. These activities ceased with the diagnosis of brain cancer in 2007.

She is survived by husband, David; children, Maxwell, Collin, and Allyn; parents, Ronald and June Pearson Bland; and sisters, Merryl, Kelli, and Roxanne Bland; and godmother, Ulius Landrum Benson; and a host of extended cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 12, 2010, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Brookside Gardens Auditorium, 1800 Glenallen Avenue, Wheaton, Md. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to: Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, DUMC 3624, Durham, NC 27710 and/or National Family Caregivers Association, 10400 Connecticut Avenue Ste. 500, Kensington, MD 20895-3944.
