Philip Ferguson Obituary

Philip W. Ferguson, Jr.

Philip W. Ferguson, Jr., age 89, of Fairlawn, passed away on October 23, 2013.

Born to Philip and Helen (Donahue) Ferguson, August 14, 1924, he attended Buchtel High School and Miami University. Philip served in the Navy during World War II, mainly in the South Pacific. He was with the Burch Directory Co. for 45 years and he also spent time with the National Security Agency in Washington D.C. He was known locally as a sports artist, displaying his work at art shows throughout northeast Ohio and was commissioned by the Professional Bowlers Association to portray their Hall of Fame bowlers. Family and friends spent many hours enjoying the numerous games Phil created for young and old alike.

Philip was especially pleased with having had the combination of both a hole-in-one in golf and a perfect 300 game in bowling.

Philip was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Bette (Hildebrand) Ferguson and his brother, John Ferguson, and is survived by daughters, Anne (Peter) and Laurinda Capp (Howard); sons, Jeffrey (Cristine) and Philip III; grandsons, Collin Ferguson (Emily), Philip Ferguson IV, Michael Ferguson and Christopher Capp; granddaughters, Carly Ferguson and Sarah Ferguson.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. TODAY, followed by a brief service at 6 p.m at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd. Interment with military honors will be 2 p.m. Monday at Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fairlawn Fire & Rescue Association, 3525 South Smith Road, Fairlawn, OH 44333. My dad tried to call "Fergie " over the holidays and did not know of his passing until we searched for him on the internet. It is with regret that we find such news. He was one of my dad's best buds in the war during the South Pacific . God bless his family. He will be missed by dad, Ray Edgar.

Jeff & Cris, Philip, Anne & families,
I'm so very sorry to hear of your Father's passing. What an incredible individual he was. I remember him and your Mom being at all the various sporting events when we were children and in high school. Your dad was a wealth of information. Nobody could find a kinder man than your Dad. My son still has the picture of Ken Griffey, Jr. he drew hanging on his wall. There were a lot of great times on Dalton Road, thanks to both your Mom and Dad always welcoming us.
I'll always remember him as Joltin' Joe. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this most difficult time.

O my. I am very sorry you're family has lost him. I work at Dairy Queen at Summit Mall and he would visit us frequently and get his Pepsi. He was a great artist and loved loved his family often speaking of his grandson playing sports and we would talk about Phil on the radio. I listen to WNIR and one day realized they could be related. I could not believe it when he said that was his son! When he moved across the street he didn't visit as much but when he did he talked about how much he loved it there and of course about the great food!! Although I'm far from living there he definitely said that's where I should go. Lol. You all were blessed to have had him. I'm sure you already know that though. Rip Mr. Ferguson.

Phil, Jeff and family. I am so sorry for your loss. Your dad was an amazing artist and a real character. I always enjoyed talking to him. The PBA is so proud to display your dad's amazing Hall of Fame portraits in our Seattle office and I know that the bowlers that were fortunate enough to have their portraits done by him cherish them. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I worked with Phil at Burch Directory over 30 years ago. I remember he always had a smile on his face and a quick joke when I came into work. Such a sweet man. My condolences to the family.

Phil (Grandpa Ferguson),
I will miss you...especially when you would sing a broadway tune from your era. You always sounded so good too!
I will miss you...especially hearing about your past. You were a very good story teller! You always kept everyone's interest!
I will miss you...especially when you would always ask me about (my son)Philip. You would always tell me what a great kid he is & that you enjoyed being around him. Well Phil, he always loved being around you! Thank You!
My family will always remember you when we play Match & Scratch...we love that game!
You will be in our hearts forever!! You left a "great" lasting impression...
You ARE from the "greatest generation!!"
