Robert Marsh Obituary

Robert "Bob" Lee Marsh

Robert "Bob" Lee Marsh, 98, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2016 in Harrisonburg, Va.

The Marshes resided in Massanutten, Va. before becoming residents of the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community (VMRC) in 2011. Bob retained his zest for being active until the last days of his life. The contentment he achieved in his long life is a testament to the Christian Endeavor values he honored throughout his days.

Born July 15, 1917 in Akron, Ohio, Bob was the son of the late, Raymond G. Marsh and Carrie Edith Rhodes. In 1937, he graduated from The University of Akron where he was a member of the golf team and the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He married his college sweetheart, Louise Butler Jobe, on January 31, 1941 and soon after was commissioned into the Army Air Corps. Bob served at Camp Kearns, Utah from 1942 until 1945. After the war, the Marshes returned home where they raised their three children. Bob spent 35 years managing the family business, the Marsh Hardware Company, before retiring to Sun City West, Ariz. in 1980, where the couple joined their siblings and enjoyed retirement activities (dancing, golf, and crafts). For a decade, the Marshes also were busy tracking progenitors. In 1999, each published a family history (Marsh, Butler) that proudly traced forebears to the earliest days of the Nation.

Bob's survivors will endeavor to build upon that proud family legacy. Predeceased by his wife, Louise Jobe Marsh (d. 2012), he is survived by daughters, Carolyn Halachoff and Nancy Marsh-Ayers; and son, Richard Marsh; grandchildren, Laura Chidester, Leah Willits, Allison Mosher, and Robert Marsh; and great-grandchildren, Alexander Chidester, Savannah Chidester, Ashley Willits, Addelyn Willits, and MacKenzie Mosher.

The family invites friends to join them in a Remembrance Gathering to be held at VMRC Park Gables (#301), 1 to 3 p.m. on Bob's birthday, July 15, 2016. A memorial site is being built on www.legacy.com to share memories, videos and photos. Mailings can be sent to Nancy Marsh-Ayers at 1826 S. Arlington Ridge Road, Arlington, VA 22202. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in his memory. Interment will be at Rose Hill Burial Park, Akron, Ohio. You can send your condolences to the Marsh family by visiting www.kygers.com.

It's December 7th, a day that will live in infamy and one remembered well by those of your generation who stepped up to serve our Country. I'm forever proud of the service you and Mom made to the WWII effort as part of the Army Air Corps..
Throughout World War II the Kearns Air Base served primarily as a training field for Air Corps personnel. The base officially opened as an adjunct of the Army Air Force Training Command on July 20, 1942, and on August 15 became a basic training center. A donation has been given to expand the World War II Museum in New Orleans to honor you, Dad and Uncle Dave Judson and Uncle Jerry West who gave his all. On this special day, we remember your collective contributions to the war effort.

Introducing Theodore (Teddy) Marsh, son of Rob and Mary and your great grandson. He's already got the 'hardware' gene helping his Dad restore their home and kissed his first girl this week, much to the chagrin of the school kindergarten principal:) Wish you were here to share stories about the Marsh family with him but no doubt Rob will add his recollections when Teddy is old enough to start reading your book. Miss you every day.

Introducing your great grandson, Henry Marsh. You'd be proud on how Rob and Mary are raising Henry and his big brother Teddy and no doubt thrilled that both boys will move forward the Marsh name. Think of you often. Love Nancy

Happy Father´s Day to the ones with us on earth and the ones in heaven! Today is bitter sweet as one of the best fathers and grandfathers that ever walked this earth, passed 7 years ago this day. Nancy and Rick, I´m thinking of you. I remember the huge hole this left in my life and our families. My only grandfather I knew. He was a man that lit up every room he entered, with such a gentle heart and impactful smile. Had mom been here today, we´d be celebrating my gramps as we had in years past, with cherry ice cream, his fav while laughing about his peanut MnM´s in the van console, his literal card thumbs, best O h card games, and his famous salt steak. Enjoy each moment with those you love and if today is a hard day for you, know you´re not alone as you remember.

Dad, Time marches on and sometimes I feel like I'm living your life all over again as the challenges of aging come to all of us. You never complained, dug deep and kept on giving of yourself to family. I so admired you and how you stepped up to each challenge in life with determination. No one respected or adored you more than I did. I miss you and am forever glad I could be there when you needed me. Today, I shall plant a grove of trees in your honor. Love Nancy

If only this was a celebration of your birthday instead of a remembrance of the many ways you touched our lives. No Dad was a better mentor, no man a better husband, no grandfather a more generous person and no individual a better role model. We all miss you. Love you forever.

Thought about you as I visited Nags Head for the last time and the home on Cobbs Way. Every blind you hung and room you painted reminded me of how many times you stepped up to help me with fixing up one of my homes. Bless you for that. Miss you. Love Nancy

In Memory of You, Dad, on Father's Day 2019

There is an empty chair and a part of me cannot believe that you will never again sit there.
My heart will always grieve, but I know my tears are less for you and more for me.
Your pain is gone and your soul flies free,
and I know that a part of you is still here with me.
Deep in my soul where only I can see, there is my love for you and your love for me.

Forever grateful for having you as my Dad.

We remember you and the things you loved on this your birthday including geraniums and ice cream. With great affection and appreciation for the memories, tomorrow we pass on the beautiful Vancouver home you and Mom built which has been kept in immaculate condition just as you would have wanted. Although we reluctantly close this Massanutten chapter, we know the new owner is excited to enjoy the home's magnificent presence on mountain. Be at peace with Mom, knowing things were handled just as you would have wanted with attention to every detail and seeing that family and friends gave new homes to your many treasures. With much love...Nancy

On this Father's Day and now one year from your passing, I am filled with sadness and love. Throughtout this year working on your estate, I have been reminded of the full life you led and the legacy you left behind for us. When it comes to Dads, you were the best. How'd I get so lucky. I Love you. Nancy
