Stanley Wolczyk Obituary

WADSWORTH -- There is a dance party in heaven because "Stan the Man" has joined the precious love of his life for 64 years, Mary (Cawley) Wolczyk in a heavenly polka. Stanley J. Wolczyk of Wadsworth, Ohio passed away peacefully at the age of 103, on August 22, 2021. He was born December 20, 1917. He was the son of the late Frank Wolczyk and Josephine (Ziska) Wolczyk. Stanley served in the U.S. Army in World War II, received a Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart while serving with the 7th Infantry Division. Under the GI Bill, he received a Bachelor of Arts from Baldwin Wallace and a Masters Degree in Education from Kent State University. He taught school at the U.S. Army base in Germany for 10 years. During his tenure, he was awarded the Teacher of the Year for the American Schools in Europe. Upon return to the United States, he worked as an elementary principal in the Norton City Schools. Stanley was the first Ohioan to receive the American Educator Medal from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge in 1981. In 1995 he was inducted in the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame. In 2017, Stan was inducted into the World War II Museum in New Orleans. Stan the Man loved family and people, story-telling, (his favorite phrase was "Are you listening?") playing bingo at Soprema Senior Center, dancing, Polish customs, teaching, and American history. He was an extraordinary American patriot. For eighteen years, he appeared at schools and civic groups costumed as famous historical characters. His costumes were created and sewn by his wife, Mary. He has portrayed George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Christopher Columbus, and Thaddeus Kosciusko, to name a few. His love of children was evident in his vocation and his volunteer work. He volunteered at Akron Children's Hospital for many years. Stanley was a devout Catholic and exemplary in his devotion in God. He attended mass and prayed daily. Stanley is survived by his children, Stanley (Deborah) Wolczyk Jr., and Penelope Sheely; his two sisters, Della Goik, and Janet Kapela; six grandchildren, David (Alisha) Sheely, Christopher (Panagiota) Sheely, Patrick (Kellie) Sheely, Lex (Travis) Sheely, Stanley J. (Audrey) Wolczyk III, and Katie-ann Wolczyk; Stanley was a great grandfather to eleven and great-great grandfather to six. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his son-in-law, Mark Sheely; his siblings, Steve Wolczyk, Maximillian Wolczyk, and Genevieve Novak. Friends and family will be received for visitation on Thursday, August 26th, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hilliard-Rospert Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St. in Wadsworth. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 27th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 260 Broad St., Wadsworth. Interment with military honors will follow at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested a donation be made to The Village of St. Edward, 880 Main Street, Wadsworth, Ohio 44281. Mr. Wolczyk attended our Open House at Grill Elementary School prior to it being torn down. He had been principal there for many years. At the Open House he was a celebrity. So many smiles and memories were shared and, of course, much laughter. It was obvious that he had made a great impact on many students that passed through the doors of Grill Elementary during his tenure at the school.

Stan and I had a special bond in that both of us were the Principal of the same school. I was Principal sixty years ago and he, fifty years ago. Our bond was strengthened when both of us attended daily Mass together at Sacred Heart until he moved to the Village of St. Edward.

He made a mark of endurance on every person he touched and on every institution he served. Every person he left behind is the richer for having known him. May his repose be as happy as he made everyone else when he was here.

Stan, the man, had a smile, laugh, and a personality that lit up a room. I worked for a dentist's office that he was a patient of; when he walked into the office, everyone knew he has arrived. He would teach anyone in the reception area how to waltz. I'm grateful to be one of the precious few that had the opportunity to learn the waltz with him.

God knew that your hearts would be sadly broken when it was time for Stanley to come home to him in Heaven. God saw his tired face so he put his arms around him and said it is time to come home. Stanley did not go alone for part of you went with him.

My deepest sympathies. Mr. Wolczyk was my principal at Grill Elementary and he was the best principal ever! I have so many wonderful memories of him from my school years there and I know I am not alone. He influenced all of his students there and we were all very lucky to have him as a leader and mentor! RIP.

A true gentleman has left our presence and all that knew him are much richer in their own life for having the honor of knowing him. Once you met Stan your life was changed forever! His quick wit (and I didn't even meet him until he was 95!) His storytelling his jokes his ability to captivate a crowd when he spoke and his laugh, and dancing all made for a memorable experience! I will never forget when I met with him to interview him for a program and HE ended up questioning me and I felt like I was right back in school!! I feel so fortunate to have met Stan and will carry his memory with me forever. My deepest sympathy to all the family and may his love for life provide all of you comfort and the memories of him warm your heart.

As a very young student, I was scared of him when he was principal at Grill Elementary School and he made us all learn to square dance! Haha. But then I met him again in 2017, what an amazing, gentle man who showed love to all. RIP
