Kathleen Doil Obituary

1956 - 2010 STAUNTON, VA Kathy was born in November 1956 in Oklahoma City to Douglas and Lynn Doil. Kathy was the fifth of five children. At age 7, Kathy and her family moved to Manassas, Virginia. In Virginia, Kathy met her lifelong best friend, Mary Warren. In 1973, the Doils moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where Kathy graduated from Stellar H.S. In 1975, Kathy set off on a major life-changing adventure, riding a motorcycle from Alaska to Virginia with her adopted brother and friend, Walter Wood. While in Virginia, Kathy met and married her soul mate, Glen "Smiley" Martin. Together they had two children, Steven Glenn and Jennifer Martin (Royce). Kathy worked for the U.S. Postal Service for thirty years, culminating that career as a Post Master in northern Virginia. Kathy's interests were varied and filled with equal parts of joy, curiosity and intense enthusiasm. She loved the Bluegrass music her husband preformed. She was also a fan of the Blues and traveled to see many star concerts. She and Smiley were decades-long members of the Grace Covenant Church in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Kathy was always fascinated by the forensic sciences, elephants, horses, and all wildlife and riding roller coasters. Kathy wanted to continue her education in the sciences and one day work in a lab helping to solve real life mysteries. In terms of elephants, Kathy took her interest to another level and attended Riddles Sanctuary to learn how to care for both Asian and African elephants. She immensely enjoyed being around the quiet dignity of horses. She loved to ride alone and just observe her surroundings. Roller coasters and amusement parks in general were also favorites. Petite Kathy always wanted to ride in the front seat, hands straight up in the air, eyes wide open and laughing all the way. Once she even took a four-day vacation devoted solely to riding roller coasters. She was also a collector of eclectic antique mirrors and bottles. One of Kathy's favorite times was rainy days and reading books of all genres. Kathy loved to visit the place of her youth, Alaska. She enjoyed both salmon and halibut fishing immensely. She loved the majestic scenery all around her. She enjoyed the very vivacity of the Alaska persona. She also enjoyed driving in the rolling hills and curved roads dotting the Shenandoah Valley. Kathy simply enjoyed the beauties that nature presented to her. Kathy was very considerate and loving to her family. She was always supportive and helped anyone in their time of need. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. They will miss her delight in ironies of this life. Her boundless sense of humor for the sardonic was a hallmark of who she was. She was predeceased by her parents, Doug and Lynn Doil. She is survived by her children, Steve and Jennifer Martin, and Royce (husband, Michael); her two vivacious grand-daughters, Lexi and Lilly; her siblings, Ann Laurence and husband, Charlie Laurence; brother, Corey Doil and his wife, Kay; her sister, Nancy Sullivan; and her brother, Jim Doil and his wife, Lucy; nephews, Corey Hunt, Daniel Sullivan, Logan Doil, and Tyler Doil; nieces, Melanie Sullivan, May Sullivan and Clare Sullivan. She also leaves behind, her best friend, Mary Warren. A celebration of Kathy's life will be held in Harrisonburg, Virginia, on January 21, 2012.

My name is Odin Brudie, in Juneau Alaska. I graduated from high school with Kathleen in 1975. We are organizing a 50th Steller High School reunion in Anchorage this summer. I was sorry to find Kathleens 2012 Obituary in my search to find our fellow 1975 graduates, the first graduating class from Steller. I am happy to see that Kathy lived an adventurous and enjoyable life, including the love of her life, her children, and grandchildren. We will think of and remembe Kathleen this summer. Respectfully,
Odin Brudie, [email protected], Juneau, Alaska

Kathy ~ You have touched so many people in so many ways and you will never be forgotten. The memories you've left for your siblings, your children, grandchildren and friends will be forever cherished. You fought a great fight, and you are now able to rest in peace, which is what we all want for you. Knowing you has been a pleasure, and it has really touched my heart to know what a wonderful friend you've been for 42+ years to my cousin and best friend, Mary. You, I know, are now in a far better place and will be watching over us all with that beautiful smile on your face.
