PAUL DOUGHERTY Obituary

September 12, 1946 - August 22, 2018 COLORADO SPRINGS, CO Paul Carey Dougherty, of Colorado Springs, CO, passed away at his home Wednesday evening, Aug. 22. He was born in Springfield, MO on Sept. 12, 1946. Paul was a graduate of Azusa Pacific University and earned his master's degree from Wichita State University. He taught at Central Christian High School in Hutchinson, KS, and later became the Administrator of that school. He then moved into hospital administration, where he spent over 30 years as President and CEO of hospitals in Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Iowa. He led Stillwater Medical Center for four years, INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center for two years and Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City for 10 years. It was during this time he met and married his wife, Peggy Gehrung Blice. He was a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and was the recipient of ACHE Senior-level Healthcare Executive Regents Award in 1999, the Cleveland Rodgers Distinguished Service Award in 2001 (Outstanding Administrator of the Year), and Oklahoma Medical Society Friend of Medicine Award in 2005. He served as Chairman of the Board of the American Heart Association in OKC, the Arthritis Foundation in OKC, was a Board member of the Omniplex Science Museum and was the Healthcare Division Chairman for the United Way of Oklahoma City. Most recently, he had been asked by the Mayor of Colorado Springs to serve on the Citizen's Commission on Ownership and Governance of Memorial Health System. He retired in 2009 and enjoyed traveling in his motor home in the Midwest and his beloved Rocky Mountains. He was an active member of his church, volunteering in various areas of community service and teaching. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, the Reverend Edward Dougherty and Mary Gibson Dougherty. Paul is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Peggy; a son, Brian (Jenny) Dougherty, of Raleigh, NC; a daughter, Laura (Jason) McBride, of Parker, CO; a son, Darrell Dougherty, of Stillwater, OK; a son, Loren (Olivia) Dougherty, of Oklahoma City, OK; stepson, Joe (Jennifer) Blice, of Plano, TX; stepdaughter, Maggie (Dean) Alfaro, of Moore, OK; stepson, Jon (Cheryl) Blice, of Oklahoma City, OK; and 16 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, David (Jeannie) Dougherty, of Denver, CO; sister, Faith (Rod) Goertzen, of Hampden, NE; sister, Ruth Dougherty, of Athens, Greece; and brother, Dan (Tricia) Dougherty, of Birmingham, AL. Services to Celebrate Paul's Life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, at Woodmen Valley Chapel, 290 East Woodmen Road in Colorado Springs, CO. The Hampton Inn Central/Air Force Academy offers Woodmen Valley Chapel a bereavement rate for those wishing to attend his Memorial Service. Reservations should be made at 719-593-9700 and mention the rate ID# 2850080. The family requests that donations be made in Paul's memory to the charity of your choice.
