Phaik-Sim Mui Obituary

Phaik-Sim Lim Mui May 25, 1921 September 26, 2001 We'll all miss you, Phaik- sim, 'Pex' Mui. On Wednesday morning September 26, 2001, 'Pex' Mui passed away in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She had moved there with her husband, Kan Chi Mui, to be with her daughter, Sui San Mui, and closer to her son, Peter Mui, in New York City, and her grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4400 N. Shartel, Sunday, October 7 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in memory of P.S. Mui to World Neighbors, 4127 NW 122nd Street, OKC, OK, 73120 or to the charity of your choice. Pex had come to the U.S. as a sixteen- year-old from her home in Penang, Malaysia where she was the youngest daughter of eight children in a prominent family of lawyers and politicians. Her mother was a physician. Her brothers and sisters received their education in Europe and Australia, but 'Pex' being Pex wanted to go the U.S. to pursue her education and make discoveries in a new land. In this she was influenced by a missionary family, the Gardners. She earned her nursing degree from Loma Linda University in southern California and spent time in northern California working as a nurse assistant with Dr. Gardner, helping field workers, many of Italian descent, in the area of Ukiah, California. World War II prevented Pex from maintaining communication with her parents and family, a loss and separation she always felt. While working at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles, she began receiving letters from a young Chinese doctoral student in economics at Princeton University who had seen her picture in a newsletter published by the U.S. State department. The article talked about her being president of her nursing class. Six months later that student, Kan Chi Mui, met her for the first time at Newark Airport. They soon married and she joined her new husband in Princeton, New Jersey, to live in an apartment across the street from Albert Einstein. She continued her studies at the University of Pennsylvania and received a degree in public health nursing. Upon completing his Ph.D., Kan and Pex moved to Oklahoma City in 1949 where Kan was offered a teaching position at Oklahoma City University in money and banking. Pex soon began raising her family of three sons - Roger, Peter, and David - and daughter, Sui San. Her involvement with the community of Oklahoma City was unlimited. She did volunteer work with the Oklahoma City Symphony, League of Women Voters, and collegiate model United Nations, entertaining international students and visitors from all corners of the world. She worked very closely with her dear friend, John Peters, the founder of World Neighbors, after whom she named her second son, Peter. In addition, she was state director of Job Corps in the mid sixties, often bringing applicants home to dinner at the Mui residence. In the late sixties, she opened Pex's Diet Shop, one of the first health stores in Oklahoma. Through her shop she counseled and helped many patients who found her to be a helper of last resort to cure many of their physical ailments. Many of her clients became close friends. Pex was always willing to reach out and help anyone in need. Pex was not only a care-giver, but a person whose faith in God helped her to enrich the lives of the many people who crossed her path. She and Kan were lifelong members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir. 'We will always be missing you and loving you, Mom, 'Pex'. Your grateful and fortunate husband and children - May God bless your soul and keep you happy'

Dear all,

This feels so strange, to be sending you my feelings electronically. But when I read Pex's obituary online, I really wanted to send you my condolences right away.

If Pex had lived to be 200, I wouldn't have been in the least bit surprised. She was so full of life, it felt like she always had extra to go around. Vivacious, gregarious, energetic...those words can only hint at the essence of Pex. To say "she was a character" doesn’t even come close. She was funny, outrageous, irrepressible. A real force. And a wonderful neighbor.

When I think of Pex, I always see her with a big smile on her face. She had a radiance that will continue to light the world for a long, long time.

My heart goes out to you all in this difficult time. I wish you strength, peace and love.
