IVAN AMICHAND Obituary

IVAN BENJAMIN AMICHAND
Ivan was born in 1946 in the village of Barrackpore in South Trinidad, the youngest of seven children of John Benjamin and Carmen Amichand. He was predeceased by his sister Esther and his brothers, Lionel, Don and Clarence. Ivan is survived by his sons, Jo-Jo (Carla) and Willie (Mandy); his grandchildren, Romeo, Armani, Mikkel and Lux; his sisters, Sybil (Edmonton) and Olive (Regina) and their families as well as nephews and nieces in Canada and Trinidad. He attended Picton Presbyterian School in Monkey Town Government School before entering Naparima College in San Fernando where he completed his high school education. In 1965 Ivan came to Regina. He completed Grade 12 from Luther High School and obtained a BA from University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus. Ivan then completed a Master of Social Work from Waterloo University in Ontario in preparation for a career as a social worker in Regina. After retirement, he and his good friend Sandy Wankel started the North Central Family Centre. Ivan loved working with children in North Central Regina because he felt he was finally making a difference. They were like one large family and he will be sorely missed. Ivan was a very kind and generous person. He worked long days at the Centre and loved every minute of it. Ivan preached two Sundays a month at St. Andrews United Church in Regina. After his Family and the Centre, this was his other community. Funeral Service will be held at Knox-Metropolitan United Church, 2340 Victoria Avenue, Regina, SK on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. Reception will follow. Should friends desire, donations in memory of Ivan, may be made to the North Central Family Centre, 2931 - 5th Avenue, Regina, SK, S4T 0L4. I can't really believe this. It's been two years since this happened, and I just found out now through looking up the North Central Family Centre online...I was planning a trip home and wanted to visit NCFC..I first met Ivan and Sandy as a fledgling volunteer when I was going to school in Regina. I've always felt bad for not keeping in touch. I can't imagine what NCFC is like without Ivan there. I am so lucky I was able to meet Ivan and get to know him, even if it was just for a short time. I'm so sorry I never made it back to visit. It's been two years, my sincere thoughts with Ivan's family and everyone who has been helped by his kind and sincere demeanour.

Jo Jo, Willie - our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families. Heaven gained a very special angel who will forever live in your hearts. You will feel him each day, guiding you through life, as you continue his legacy of love. I will always remember how excited Jon was when we would see Ivan. They would giggle and tease each other - each and every time. Listening to your dad's words of wisdom that were read at his service will resonate with me forever! Such powerful, compassionate, healing words that will never be forgotten. Lots of love....Toni & Jon.

I was saddened to hear about the passing of Ivan. I first came to know him through the church I attended and through my university classes. He rapidly became someone I was proud to know. I moved to Ontario last year but before I left we had a chance to say good-bye. Little did I know that it would be the last time I would see him/talk to him. I was unaware that he was ill. I send deep condolences to the family at the centre and to his family. He will be greatly missed.

Ivan's legacy was simple: Give your life to those in need. "It is said that the average person will be remembered by 5-6 people when they die." Ivan will be remembered by hundreds of people. This speaks highly of how much effort he put into his life to leave an enduring legacy. People don't think much about leaving a legacy and Ivan probably didn't either. He had a calling to be kind, generous and to love mankind and he fulfilled that on a daily basis.

God touched Ivan. God's work was emanate with his daily contact with his 2 boys Will and JoJo and his 4 grandchildren, Romeo, Armani, Mikkel and Lux. He treated his daughter-in-laws, Mandy and Carla as his own children, with love and respect. Ivan was extremely proud of his family. He visited and phoned daily to his children and grandchildren to make sure they were doing okay and asking if they needed anything. He played with his grandchildren daily, running and laughing with them. Ivan left a positive impact on his children and grandchildren.

Not only did Ivan leave good memories with his family, he also left a positive legacy with North Central families. He worked endless hours at his job, not for monetary gains but because it was his calling, his passion. He always took time for others in need. God is always watching and guiding us. The question is do we listen. I think that Ivan was listening.

I know that losing someone who is the head of a family is very difficult. Losing Ivan, a friend, father, and grandfather is difficult to understand at this time. However, life will carry on no matter what we do. We will be sad; we will cry; we will be angry; we will tell stories; we will laugh; we will remember; we will miss Ivan; and life moves on.
You will not forget Ivan for his memories live on in your actions. You will see him in Will's and JoJo's faces and in their actions. You will see Ivan in his grandchildren when they run and play and laugh. And you will see him in his friends and at North Central Family Centre. You will feel his presence. He is in our hearts.

We have a choice now. Ivan is no longer here on earth but in our very being. We can lie down and feel sorry for ourselves or we can do what Ivan would do. He would tell a joke, laugh and do something good for someone else.

Ivan left a legacy; a story for all of us to carry on. Your story is the greatest legacy that you can leave to your friends. It is the longest lasting legacy that you will leave to your heirs. Let us carry on his legacy.

Until we meet again, may God hold you gently in the palm of his hands.

Gods Blessings
With love,
Holly and Darrell Beitel
