Donald Daniels Obituary

MANASSAS, Va. - Donald Judson Daniels, 77, of Manassas, died Sunday (Feb. 28, 2021) at his home. With the support of all those he loved, he had faced a long illness with stoic resolve, optimism and Christian faith.

Born in Olean, N.Y., to Rosamond M. Raub Daniels and Donald Judson Wightman, he graduated from Port Allegany Union High School and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

He earned his bachelor's degree from the Pennsylvania State University, and a master's degree from Central Michigan University. He was also a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Air War College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army Infantry and Intelligence Schools.

He married Eileen M. Baker, from Meadville, Pa. After many military moves, the family settled in the Washington, DC area, following an assignment at the Defense Intelligence Agency.

He was a career army officer, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam and retiring from the Intelligence Branch as a major.

Following active military service, he pursued a second career, working for three computer companies. After 9/11, he returned to government service as an imagery analyst with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, three Bronze Stars, three Air Medals, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, three Joint Service Commendation Medals, Army Commendation Medal, Reserve Component Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with six campaign stars, Joint Chiefs of Staff Service Badge and three Unit awards, including the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Springfield, and was active in the church choir and the Manassas Chorale.

He is survived by his wife; and three children, Scott W. (Gaye Troy) Daniels of Silver Spring, Md., Anne E. Daniels of Falls Church and Katherine S. (Steven) Young, of Berwick, Maine.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no public viewing. His memorial service will be livestreamed from St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Springfield. Final interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, at a later date.

He will be remembered for his service to our country, and for his loving care and commitment to all who knew him.
