John Capito Obituary

John P. Capito

OLEAN --- John P. Capito, 101, formerly of 510 Alder Street, Olean, passed peacefully on August 30, 2024 at Cuba Memorial Hospital.

Born January 9, 1923 in Delianuova, Italy, John was the son of the late Domenico and Caterina (Foti) Capito. As a young child, John immigrated to the United States with his family to Olean, where he graduated from Olean High School and attended St. Bonaventure University. John served his country honorably and proudly in the US Navy on the USS Plunkett during World War II, receiving many honors; most notably the French Medal of Honor.

On July 31, 1948, John married his beloved wife, the former Lucy Rose Ranio at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Sadly, she preceded him in death on December 22, 2018 after 70 years of marriage.

John worked for the city of Olean in the Water Department for many years, retiring as the Chief Water Treatment Plant Operator. Shortly after, he served as a City Alderman in Ward 2 and on his 100th birthday in 2023, John received the "Key to the City" from Mayor William Aiello.

John was a lifelong member of Saint John's Church and a volunteer at Saint Vincent de Paul Society and also spent many years as its President. John was a devout Christian who loved his church and was a very active member his whole life. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and gardening.

Most of all, John loved time spent with family. John is survived by his four loving children; Frances Edens of Queen Creek Arizona, Lorraine (David) Sirianni of Cuba, John (Joan) Capito of Crossville, Tennessee and James (Cathy) Capito of Vero Beach Florida, nine cherished grandchildren; Nicole Glass (Benjamin), Andrew Dillon (Jennell), Philip Sirianni (Grace), Julie Sirianni Schmidt, Marie Souders (Anthony), Catherine Capito, Anthony Capito, Vincent Capito and John Capito; nine great-grandchildren, Lauren, Joshua and Isaac Glass, Aidan, Kegan and Addison Dillon, Naythan and Bentley Kirkland, and Avery Schmidt; and siblings Dominik (Bertha) Capito of Weston Mills and Josephine Robak from Olean, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and beloved wife, John was preceded in death by three brothers; Anthony, Joseph and Pasquale Capito, and a sister, Mary Psathas.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 from 4 pm to 7 pm, at Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 1303 E State St. Olean. Funeral services celebrating John's life will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, beginning with a prayer service in the Funeral Home at 9:30 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John's Church, 931 N. Union St, Olean, at 10 am. Burial will follow at St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Allegany. Full military honors to be accorded by the Allegany American Legion.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or the donor's choice.
