Hello Chartier Family,
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Chartier and his wife Linda, at Abercrombies Restaurant in West Omaha, Nebraska in the mid 80s. Upon them being seated in our restaurant, my Manager came up to me and said V.I.P. To which I said they are all VIPs to me, he just looked at me and said I mean it. We laughed.
Soon I met the Chartiers, and sooner I discovered so many positive qualities that they emitted, their class, their love for one another, their kindness to others, and their noticeable happiness. I thought, some day when I find that special person, I hope it will be like that for me too. They were inspiring.
I got to know them over time as they would often visit our restaurant. I was flattered that they would request me upon visiting. And over a very little time, I got to know and to truly appreciate them. Sometimes, in life I have found that one can have a strong connection with people, without knowing very much about them.
One evening Mr. Chartier asked me what I did, other than work at the restaurant, I told him I was an undergraduate at UNO studying Marketing and Advertising, and that I would be graduating in 2 years. Thats when he told me that he could get me an interview with 3M Company after I graduated if I wanted one. I thought are you kidding me, how awesome.
Over the next two years, I exclusively served the Chartiers, and on one of their visits I was happy to tell that I had graduated from UNO. They were about as happy for me as I was! I ask Mr. Chartier if he could still get me in interview with 3M. He asked me to meet him at his office that Monday, and to bring my resume. I said oh YA.
So, I did give him my resume, and in visiting his office I was very impressed with all the Sales Award plagues and his business. I thanked him, and soon moved back to New Jersey.
Upon moving back, I applied with 3M in the form of a letter. Unfortunately, they sent me 3 letters of rejection. Until, one day I got a call from a 3M Manager in Philadelphia. And that Manager, upon my asking, told me that it was Mr. Chartier that got me that first interview. I thought Wow.
And after 16 interviews and 6 months later, I was hired by 3M. I have thought about Mr. Chartier, over the years. I remember calling him after I had completed my 10th year with 3M. I am proud to say that last January 29, 2020, was my 30th year anniversary with the Company.
If it was not for meeting the classy Chartiers, my professional career could have been different.
I thank you Sir, I know you are in Heaven.
May God Bless The Chartier Family with Love,
Richard W. Bates

I was so saddened to hear of Allan's passing - or Al as we called him. He was a kind, thoughtful, fun and friendly classmate from Everett Elementary School, through West Junior High and Sioux City Central. Our parents were in PTA together in grade school. I just found out about his death while searching the internet for information on my high school 50th class reunion which would be this year. Ironically, just this morning I was fondly recalling a conversation we had at an earlier reunion - and how happy he was with his wife and family..... to whom I send heartfelt condolences.
