Andrew Havens Obituary

Andrew M Havens

December 30, 1999 - March 1, 2025

Andrew Michael Havens (Drew) was called to eternal life on March 1, 2025 in Bellingham, WA following a 2½-year journey with colon cancer. Drew was born on December 30, 1999 in Omaha, NE. He attended Millard Public Schools and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) with dual Bachelors Degrees in Environmental Studies and Natural Resources and Environmental Economics (both with Honors) and a Masters Degree in Agricultural Economics.

Drew was an avid cellist and took every opportunity to share his love of music. He was an Eagle Scout in BSA Troop 430 and enjoyed all types of outdoor activities and providing servant leadership to his fellow scouts. He shared his love of cooking with family and friends and organized many social gatherings to share his creations with others. Drew was passionate about the future of our environment and used his voice to mobilize others to make a difference in this regard.

Drew grew up as a member of Faith Westwood United Methodist Church in Omaha and more recently attended St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Bellingham, WA. He developed a strong faith that did not waver even in his darkest moments.

Drew met Caroline Laycock when they were cello players in the UNL Symphony Orchestra and they have been inseparable ever since. They moved to Bellingham, WA in June 2023 when Drew accepted an opportunity to serve as a research economist at Western Washington University. Their time in Bellingham was filled with much joy as they made new friends, found a church home and enjoyed the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. They were married on September 15, 2024 which was a time of great celebration.

Drew is survived by his wife Caroline Laycock, parents Brian and Sandy Havens, brother Ben Havens, grandparents Paul and Nina Havens and Ken and Mary Jane Heavrin and many cousins, aunts, uncles and other family members. A memorial service will be held at Faith Westwood United Methodist Church in Omaha, NE on March 15, 2025, including visitation at 10:00 a.m., service at 11:00 a.m. and a luncheon following the service. Drew has donated his body to science through the University of Washington. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Brian and Sandy Havens who will donate to causes that Drew was passionate about.

Dear Caroline, Brian, and Sandy,
My heart is breaking for you. I have so many wonderful memories of Drew through his years of studying cello with me at UNL. He had a passion for life and was committed to all that he did. I will always remember his kindness, his warm personality, and wonderful smile. I´ll never forget how thrilled he was when his parents/grandparents bought him a new cello. He was so happy! I will forever cherish our time together at UNL.

With much love, Karen
